    Questions about Housing Babies together

I'm new to garters, but have an unexpected litter from a WC female on my hands at the moment. I dealt with them the same way I would other colubrids--seperating them into individual small containers. I've been feeding them panfish worms, and also tried a mix of pinky parts and chopped nightcrawler, which went over better with some of them than others.

I've been told now that baby garters actually do better if they are housed together. Is there truly evidence to support this? I realize that it's ok, and convenient, but is it actually superior? Do they have problems if they are housed seperately?

Re: Questions about Housing Babies together

I've never housed my babies separately, so I can't really talk about that, but it does seem to me with adult garters that most of them seem to fare better in small groups, whereas some really need their own space
I separate babies into small groups of 2-5, usually by food preference
some groups I feed in their enclosure, others I separate for feeding - it's pretty much based on what works for any particular group

If my thinking is correct those panfish worms are red
worms and toxic. If they are Walmart bought then I know they are red worms and should not be feed to your Garters. Stick with the night crawler. Guppies are also safe for them to eat. Check out the care sheet on the home page for a lot of other great info.

They are Eisenia hortensis rather than Eisenia foetida (I looked them up on the supplier's website).

A bit of browsing did not reveal any toxicity reports for Eisenia hortensis.
