Looks to be an eastern garter snake, thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis. Make sure you give him places to hide, and plenty of time and space to settle in.

Did you take the snake from an area that has water with little fish in it? If not, he might just not be very experienced at catching fish! If Steve's nightcrawler suggestion doesn't work, you could try putting the guppies in a shallow dish with very little (or no) water, which will make them a lot easier for him to find and catch.

    Welcome!

Nightcrawlers were the first thing I saw my W/C Eastern eat. Then she quickly went to fish and pinkies. My newest Eastern has eaten pinkies and salmon within 2 weeks of having her. (That I have confirmed) She may have been eating sooner, I just didn't witness it. Now, I don't seem to have enough!

    Welcome!!!!!

Give the snake time to get used to captivity. Make sure you provide plenty of hiding places. Snakes like to think that nobody can see them.

If you can't get it to eat worms or guppies, try salamanders. I have never seen a snake turn down a wriggling salamander. Salamanders can carry parasites, but since your snake is wild-caught it's probably been eating them anyway so I wouldn't worry about it. Just make sure you don't accidentally feed it a poisonous or endangered species of salamander (just avoid the brightly colored ones.)

Just relax and be patient. My wild caught eastern garter took around three weeks to start eating.
