Ribbon snake questions
dunno if this is the right section but i just got a female ribbon snake about a year and a half old (or so im told) and the guy put it in a cloth bag for me, when i went to put it in its cage it was real lively and actually put its mouth over my palm, didnt sink any teeth in but it gave me a jump. are these snakes usually this aggressive or was she just trying to protect herself and jumpy from the 40mile ride home?
i got this big girl for my girlfriend and now shes a little scared to handle the snake, i plan to not even go near the snake for a few days to let her get settled into the new enviroment but if shes gunna stay aggressive im gunna have to give her away.

Re: Ribbon snake questions
I think it was more fear and trauma. But in my (limited) experience, ribbons are also very, very skittish snakes and while mine don't strike at me, they run for the hills whenever I approach them.
Let her settle in for a while and see how she does...

I,also find the ribbon snakes more skiddish than garters. Not aggresive, but definately "jumpy".

Re: Ribbon snake questions
well she has yet to settle down, while cleaning the casge she struck at me again and i cant get anywhere near her, if i even walk past the cage she runs and hides. any ideas what i can do to try and calm her down at all? i hate to do it but ill probably be giving her away if i cant get her to settle down.

Re: Ribbon snake questions
Ribbons just seem to stay skittish. My guy, Bob Evans, who I've had for what... going on three months now... still darts to hide every time I walk by the tank. Just freaks. Mine don;t strike at me, tho...
I wish you were closer, I'd take her and give her a good home... I worry she'll keep getting passed from home to home. Come on, drive her down to Va. :-)

Re: Ribbon snake questions
Ribbon snakes seem to make far better "display" snakes than "pets"
I just love my ribbons, They are all over the place. Great fun to watch.
Most likely (there are exceptions) this will never be a "lap snake" and it will probably musk and act squirrelly whenever it is handled.

i could always ship if you really wanted her. you just pay shipping
i made the mistake of not knowing what a ribbon snake was like, i seen the guy at the show with them and just fell inlove with the look and she was only $10. live and learn i guess. i do love watching her play around but i hate the idea that she lieks to strike whenever i clean the cage, i know it dont hurt but it still makes ya jump (or me atleast). the worst part is i got her for my girlfriend and im kinda worried about my girlfriend trying to handle her due to how fast and scared she is. maybe ill give it a week and see how it goes, unless someone REALLY wants her i would be willing to part for just shipping.

Re: Ribbon snake questions
Just to double check, ribbons can live with other garters though right?
