    Weight

I've been wondering for a while now about garter snakes' weights in relation to their lengths, and I'd like to know if any of you have weighed yours.

I've been weighing and measuring mine every couple of months since I got my first garter. My male grew 10cm (4") and increased by about 5g (~10%) in weight during the first year I had him. I'd like to find out if 49 grams is little for a 65cm male parietalis, but I don't have anything to compare it to.

    Re: Weight

I have a 64.8cm (25.5") female T.s. concinnus that weighs 62.4g (2.2 oz) and a 73.7cm (29") female T.s. concinnus that weighs 108g (3.8 oz). I'd have to check another place for my T. ordinoides data. As I recall, the longest is a female. She's about 61cm (24"), but I don't remember her weight. She's around 50g, though. They gain weight and thickness quickly after they reach their adult length.

    Re: Weight

Any males? My male still looks as skinny as before, even though it has always been eating well. I figure males are supposed to be like that.

My female is roughly 75cm (29-30") and weighs 79g right now, but then again she hasn't eaten more than a pinky or a fish head
a week since november. She just shed and now she's again taking complete fish.

And it's always the head it chooses. Because the eye works as a visual cue, maybe?

    Re: Weight

I'm not a big weigh, measure, ... fan. I only weigh mine when they go into hibernation, but they didn't go into hibernation this year so... I can't help with this one.

    Re: Weight

    Hi Stefan,
I dug through a couple more notebooks and came up with a range of length/weight measurements. I tried not to duplicate lengths unless there was a male/female difference in weight. Cheers,
    Rick

    13.5" (34.3cm) male T.s. concinnus that weighs 0.3oz (8.5g)
    14.5" (36.8cm) female T. ordinoides that weighs 0.3oz (8.5g)
    15.5" (39.4cm) female T.s. concinnus that weighs 0.4oz (11.3g)
    16.5" (41.9cm) male T. ordinoides that weighs 0.5oz (14.2g)
    19.5" (49.5cm) male T.s. concinnus that weighs 1.0oz (28.3g)
    21.5" (54.6cm) male T.s. concinnus weighs 0.9oz (25.5g)
    22.5" (57.2cm) female T. ordinoides weighs 1.4oz (39.7g)
    22.8" (57.9cm) male T.s. concinnus that weighs 1.4oz (39.7g)
    25" (63.5cm) male T.s. concinnus weighs 1.9oz (53.9g)
    25.5" (64.8cm) female T.s. concinnus that weighs 2.2oz (62.4g)
    27" (68.6cm) female T.s. concinnus that weighs 2.8oz (79.4g)
    29" (73.7cm) female T.s. concinnus weighs 3.8oz (108g)

** My scale is only accurate to within 0.1oz, so the metric weights increase by increments of 2.8g at the least. **
