that the only exact way to tell if its a red-sided or fitchi is that red-sided have small black dots on the ends of their ventrals and fitchi have balck striped or nothing, is this true?

The red side of life.
key to species
Those keys do only work together with habitat because of the enormous varity of garters pattern.
You should have a closer look to your snake when its feeding or fed up.
If its a red sided you should see even small red or orange areas between the scales up to 8th scale row.
Also fitchci is called to have clear colors red, yellow, black and no blending even from yellow to red.
