    Caught my garter!

I've always loved snakes but now in my thirties I finally got one.. for free.. in my driveway. I found Gojira last year as a tiny baby and he has lived with me for a year now. It is legal in my state to have a captive caught garter, I finally got around to checking . Anyway I wanted a good place to talk to people about these wonderful animals.

Today is special for Gojira because today is the first day I fed him a pinkie mouse. He took it gently from my hand though I may get forceps for the future just in case. Up until now he's been living on guppie fish and worms sprinkled with vitamin powder.

    Anyway, hello to everyone!

Congrats to you and Gojira! Welcome to the forum. The vitamin powder only needs to be sprinkled on the worms like twice a month and not with every feeding. Whole guppies and whole pinkies are mostly complete nutrition. Pinkies though have high percentages of mostly moisture.

Thank you for your welcomes <3

Yes I stepped outside and took some pictures of my snake in the light. I don't know the exact species. He's nothing special, just a common black and green garter. As for vitamins I was really careful, he got them maybe every month or every other month at most: I just wanted a little insurance. At first I kept him on paper towels but now I use forest floor mix although it is harder to spot clean. He seems to save all his poop for pooping on me when I take him out of the cage, anyway .

He's a handsome little guy, here you go.

Try to mix the forest floor with a drier substrate bc the forest floor alone will elevate the humidity percentage. It will also be a bit too moist in the long run by itself. Forest floor is more for tropical species animals. You can thin it out with a "yesterday's news" substrate, aspen, carefresh, sophresh or just any other drier substrate.

Isn't forest floor bedding just cypress mulch?
I used that mixed with aspen for a while, like Albert said.

Looks like a beautiful Thamnophis sirtalis - Common Garter Snake. I will caution you about feeding in that home as that bedding is very sharp and when swallowed can cause intestinal damage resulting in death.
