Get a few more suggestions as I'm not very familiar with Wandering.

Next time just count the upper labial scales. 8 is T. elegans.

Here's a list of garters found in CO. They all have 7 upper labial scales except for T. elegans which has 8.

    • W. Blackneck Garter Snake - Thamnophis c. cyrtopsis (S.E. to S.W. CO) Uncommon
    • Western Terrestrial Garter Snake - Thamnophis elegans vagrans("Wandering" subspecies) (Most of Colorado) Common
    • Plains Garter Snake - Thamnophis radix (Eastern Slope) Common
    • Red Sided Garter Snake - Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis (North-Central to N.E. CO) Common

Count them on both sides. It's not necessarily 8 on both.
