    Litter #7 PANDA PIED MAKERS!!!

This is a very significant litter. The dame is a melanistic female and the sire is het piedbald. These babies aren't much to look at because they are phenotypically normal, but they are 100% het melanistic and 50% poss het piebald, so they have incredible genetic potential. They have the potential to make a white snake with black patches, which could be very impressive looking. A total of 9 live babies, two stills, and a few jellys.

Will be interesting to see if this is possible.. The only other "panda pieds" that I know of are ball pythons in which it isn't a melanistic used but rather a super form of the black pastel. I believe the melanistic will overpower the pied but should be interesting to prove out none the less.

I agree with Shannon. I have doubts about that. Pied genes really just turn off a group of cells' ability to function. Even if a snake was melanistic, as long as the pied gene could still do this, you would still have white patches or at the very least you would have "mocha" (like the snow eastern) colored patches but who knows. We really have no idea how the genes would interact.

You know, it occurred to me that this pied gene could be lethal to homozygotes (it's very common) and that the original pied was actually a het. That would make all these "het pieds" actually normals. Everyone has been assuming that the pied phenotype is homozygous but the odds of that are actually pretty slim.

Congrats Jeff! That's some potential power, right there

Tyler, hopefully the pied gene will work like they do with balls. You can have pied in combination with other recessives and not hide the pied trait.

Thanks guys, hope it pans out too. Won't know the answer for 2 years likely, but it will be fun to dream along the way none the less.
