    A Non Thamnophis Garter Snake

Was reading The Reptile Report and saw an article about herping in South Africa.
Came across this interesting snake with an interesting name.

How interesting. It's face reminds me a little of a queen snake

I don't like how the video keeps referring to garters in general and saying things that are untrue for real garters. I assume they mean those types of garters...But still..

I've never heard of this snake before and wonder how it came about its common name. Apparently in South Africa has it's own definition of what a garter snake is.

Good point, I hadn't thought of that.

What about the "Indonesian Garters"? Is that kinda like this situation, or is that just a false name?

I imagine they got the name for the same reason North American garters did. Look at the pattern. Just think of the dorsal as a thick stripe.

I'm guessing that's more a commercial name then anything. A way of letting the public identify with the product.
I feel sorry for all those Keelback snakes that are sentenced to death in the pet trade.

    Hi All

Yes that's our local garter snake here in SA, as you all said not live bearing, no keeled scales and have it venom that is as potent as a cobra! and they are not the most beautiful snakes around either, they are not common at all, I have never seen a live one.
