Nice to have you with us. What part(State) of the country do you live in? This way we can give you an idea of what garter you might have.
The care sheet is always a great read especially since you have your first garter.

    Re: Hello from Oregon!

Thank you for all the kinda words everyone!
    I am in Medford, OR.
It seems like I have gotten myself a Valley Garter, who is just awesome. I have always admired and studied about various herps, but just recently I have gotten into collecting. Just a week ago we took on a pair of Leopard Gecko's and have been enjoying them VERY much.
We had talked about snakes, but we didn't want constrictors due to our cats (they are very special to us and the idea of an "accident" with a constrictor horrified my wife and I) so we really put off the idea of a snake, until yesterday when we found our little one in my father in law's hay field. The kids loved it, and I remembered fond memories of finding Kingsnakes, garters and "red racers" (what I now know where sharp tailed snakes (C. longicaudae ) and not "racers" at all) in the fields around my Northern California home. Seeing that joy in my daughters eyes really excited me to bringing our little friend home, and a better genus could not have happened into our life! I am so excited. Non-constrictor, small adult size, very docile temperament (especially this one!) what more could I ask for!?
