    Snake Lovers In Colorado

I am interested to see if there are any members in colorado who know the best places to find other species of Garter?

    • W. Blackneck Garter Snake - Thamnophis c. cyrtopsis
    • Western Terrestrial Garter Snake - Thamnophis e. vagrans
    • W. Plains Garter Snake - Thamnophis r. haydenii
    • Red Sided Garter Snake - Thamnophis s. parietalis

I dont have anyway to keep another snake, but I thought a 'snake hunting outing' would be a fun thing to do. See these other species up close and in the wild.

My friend sees Vagrans in Golden all the time, near Colorado Mills Mall.

T.radix has no sub-species recognized now. Thamnophis r. haydenii is no more

T.e. vagrans can be found all over the Denver metro area. I have only found one T. radix and it had been killed by a bird, but it was a little west of Chatfield State Park.

Heh...I used to live In Greeley! Wish I had been into snakes when I lived out there. Btw...I hated Greeley. I loved Boulder! Loved going into the rockies...but Greeley was too conservative for me.

Maybe I'll head up to Greeley in the fall. I've kind of shut it down for the summer because I'm not finding much and it's been so hot. I'm also having trouble finding new places around Denver - we have lots of green space but most parks want you to stay on the trails. My biggest deterrent has been other park visitors, some are really uptight and will call CPW if they see you off trail or flipping logs.

That is kind of silly. Are they worried about you defiling the park or hurting snakes or what?

I mostly only ever find Radix around where I live in Aurora. My neighbor has a pool and they are plentiful in her yard.

I had some old lady call the call the cops on me and my step kids cause we were playing in a river and looking for crawdads. I guess some people have nothing better to do than make trouble for other people who are not doing anything wrong.
