    My lucky day?

As you guys know I have become victim to the Addiction that is Garter snakes. I was at a local reptiles show and at the last 10 min of the show some guy walks up to me. He asked if I wanted to buy his female garter that he didnt want any more. I gave $40 for her in hope to see her bounch back in my care.

I said lets see it. We first off it is a female and it was an albino checkard. second she was NEAR DEATH! no mites or scars though. He had told me he was to busy to care for her anf forgets to feed her. apparently the last time she at was a month ago and it was a pinky and then again a month before. She was 45 grams, very long, and very very skinny, when I got her home and like a wet noodle. The guy had no idea of her age and to tell you the truth I didnt feal like talking to him anymore after he handed her over. I would guess she is 2yrs old?

I got her home on Sat after noon and let put her into a small tub with a 1/4 inch of water. I kid you not! she drank ALL the water I though she was trying to drown herself lol. I was sooo happy to see he actually start moving! So I let her chill all night in her cage and in the morning I offered her a small crawler. She nailed it unsceneted and slowly took it down. I offered her another this morning and she slammed it! It looks like I saved her life! I will get pics of her soon.

    Re: My lucky day?

Great job rehabbing her. I sincerely mean that, I have tremendous respect for those helping mistreated animals.

As someone who helped run a rescue many years ago It frustrates me on the other hand that people get sucked into paying money for someone elses problem. He profited from his terrible care (abuse really) and as long as he keeps making money at it, he won't likely change his behaviour.
It preys on good people and their nurture instinct and feeds the cycle. I understand that sometimes life happens and people might even get in over their heads and need to surrender an animal, kudos to those people for trying to do right by the animal and getting it the care it needs and having it rescued. My issue is with those people making money from it. More often than not it also ends with heartbreak & expense on the end of the person who buys the abused animal.
It goes against our very nature to not help what we see as immediate distress, it's the hardest thing to do but in the big picture we can help more of them by not buying the unhealthy abused animals.

Sorry for the rant, I just see too many good people getting taken advantage of this way.

    Re: My lucky day?

With my "new love" for garters I was on the look any way. The guys wanted $100 and I had told him the snake did not look healthy and I would not even offer half. He said $40 and I pounced. I was saddened but he did have two corn snakes he was trying to sell as well, those two were nice and thick. I actually think that this guy just didnt remember to buy a feeder for the garter because he was focuesed on the corns. He did give a big speal about being gone at school and stuff. I just think this poor little girl was forgotten about.

    Im happy to have her!

The good thing in the end is that she's being well cared for now

Well if all that's wrong is undernourishment and dehydration, I'm sure that snake will be lookin' good in short order. See if you can get him to take pinkies and give him all he will eat, and often, and he'll be back to health in no time.
