    Observing wild garters

One of my fondest memories of observing a wild garter was when I was with my hiking group. We stopped for lunch and I found a garter snake sun bathing on a large rock.
I tried to keep a low profile so that the garter wouldn't be frightened by my presence. I sat down next to the garter to eat my lunch. The garter stayed on the rock sun bathing the entire time I was there.

What made this experience better is usually when I find garters they are quickly fleeing.
The best way to actively search for and find garters tends to be to uncover their hiding places, which results in them quickly fleeing.

    Some can be rather docile.

They are not just snakes. They're garter snakes.
