    Humane dispatching methods

I had to dispatch a baby snake today. Dog got it, open wound with clearly completely severed spine, no chance of good outcome. I smashed the head, which was very quick. Is this the best method with an adult as well?

It probably is at this point. In the past I have used CO2 but have read there may still be pain. Your method is violent but effective in ending their suffering, I used that method a month ago for a mower injured garter. I didn't like doing it but it had to be done. Sorry to hear about this situation.

They are not just snakes. They're garter snakes.

Right by where we found the albino garter we have my brother ran over a garter while we were riding our bikes. It had some gut protruding. We talked about what to do but I said there wasn't anything that could be done and we crushed it's head with a bike. It is the most humane, quick way I can think of. You made the right choice.
