    Annoying Sounds?

Was wondering what are some sounds that annoy snakes, or, you know, hurt them etc...

Like, music with alot of bass...

Specifically, ya know those older TVs, and that bight pitch sound it makes? Would that do anything?

    Re: Annoying Sounds?

Their inner ear is designed to be sensitive to vibration and low frequencies. (bass) there is no indication that they can hear much else. High frequencies at decibel levels (volume) low enough so as not to produce significant vibrations will not be heard by them. They can't hear a bird singing but they will hear the roar of an approaching freight train, and within a few feet, they can sense footsteps from cattle, deer, people, etc.

Thanks... if it's only vibrations that would mean they can't really hear stuff like, let's say, a really quite siren. It's high pitch, but not loud... right?

Thanks that's exactly what I wanted to know.

Some more examples of what does annoy them would still be cool.

She doesn't do much any more. I've told her enough times that it's ANNOYING! She's a good kid though.

Hm.. This is a bit odd, but I'm synesthetic (I can see certain sounds) and I've noticed that the snakes can seem to 'hear' the sounds that I can see. Pretty much anything low pitched or like... Certain noises that are both loud and clear enough to resonate, like a violin vibrato or something. Though those are probably also strong enough to cause vibrations that can be felt

    Re: Annoying Sounds?

Exactly. That's the kind of sounds I'm talking about. However, they are capable of hearing frequencies that are lower frequency than we can hear. Sounds that we would be totally unaware of unless they were loud enough to cause vibration, and even then, we would only feel it, not hear it.

The May 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens comes to mind. Many animals could hear the low frequencies and started going bezerk, or disappeared completely that morning, long before I could see or hear anything. It was a bright sunny morning, but eerily silent. No birds were singing even where I was, 54 miles away. They could hear it (the rumbling) before it even erupted. Humans couldn't hear a thing until the landslide occurred. The animals knew though. They had early auditory warning. Same with most earthquakes. Animals can hear it approaching before the shaking starts. I think this is why loud, low frequencies drive your snakes crazy. To them, it's the sound of approaching danger. Landslides, eruptions, earthquakes, etc.
