Re: Need advice on buying garters over the net.
I've had four snakes shipped to me, in two packages. I'd do it again, but some of my advice to you would be to check out anyone your thinking of buying from on the BOI, Board of Inquiry® - FaunaClassifieds you can put their name in to search or if their not there you can start a thread asking for info on them. There are several ways to ship reptiles, but I personally would make sure that they use FedEx, it's a little more expensive, but I've heard a few horror stories about the other ones. Most of the time the other ones work well, but especially for your first time shipping, would want to make sure everthing goes smoothly. Hope that helped. Good luck!
Too many snakes! 15 species and counting. 2.2 plus Crested geckos 2.2 Gargoyle geckos 0.2 Chihuahua 2.1 evil cats.

welcome to the forum, Moe
I've only had one bad experience with shipping, and it could have been avoided
just make sure, you (and not a good friend or neighbour) are there to receive the delivery. Check the status on the internet during the morning of the delivery on the internet every 20 minutes until you get it, so the moment it's listed as "delivered" and you don't have it in your hands, you can call them and find out where it really is.
Those are the mistakes I made.
Come spring/summer there will be lots of garters to chose from right on this forum; right now the pickings might be a bit slim, but you can always check our classified section

For the MOST part, as long as you are buying from someone who knows how to properly package and ship a reptile and someone who is a reputable business person, things go just fine.

And you probably never will find them in a pet store. Garters live in Nevada, therefore, it would be illegal to sell one in a pet store. Some western u.s. stores sell ribbon snakes though, since they cannot be found (in the wild) in the west.
I've been curious about how to ship too. Some years ago, I had dozens of young concinnus on my hands. Couldn't find a single soul anywhere who was interested in them, or anyone who already owned them. Released them all! Now I see that has changed and I'll be getting a pair next spring and start breeding again.

depends on the species.....the stores can't sell native to their state species.... I picked up a couple male red sided garters here 2 summers ago, the guy gave them to me, had bought them for his kids at a petsmart out here....haven't seen any since...
