With about two or three exceptions, yes, you can house different garter species together. But make sure you only have one gender per enclosure, or you'll end up with hybrids.

Hello and welcome to the forum! Make sure you stop by the welcome lounge and say hello so that everyone can give you a proper welcome. Here is our garter care sheet: Garter Snake Care Sheet - Caresheets

It will help with most of the questions you will have about caring for garters, but any questions not answered by the sheet...we will be happy to help you. Like Stefan said, it is fine to keep a red-sided and a checkered in the same enclosure as long as they are both of the same gender. You also want to consider size...you always want to try to have two garters of about equal size together. In other words, you wouldn't want to put a baby in with a large adult. Also, you want to consider that if one of the garters is albino, you need to be careful with lighting...albinos do not always like light and UV light is dangerous for them. I just mention this because many of the checkered garters that we see members with are albino checkereds.
