While variety is best, I like to know more about individual food items (in case some types of foods wind up unavailable for lengths of time). Has anyone maintained garter snakes for long periods exclusively on worms? If so, they remain health and vigorous, grow normally, etc, or did they develop issues? If they did develop any signs of deficiency, what were they deficient in?
(I know that worms are high in protein, low in fat, and have a good calcium/phosphorus ratio, but I don't know what they may be lacking, and that's the info I am after).

My snakes have worms as the main food source and do very well.
I know the wild population feeds almost exclusively on worms and they seem to grow large and healthy.

Same here in Illinois. I find Radix living in parking lots surviving mainly on earthworms. Cant really say the same for the other 3 species of Thamnophis that i find in my state. Radix is closely related to butleri and brackystoma that specialize in a earthworm diet.

I would think that the easterns around here survive primarily on earthworms. That is mainly what we have for a food source here. My easterns would only eat worms when I first found them, it took me a while to get them to eat pinkies and fish. From what I have read, they are known to have an earthworm diet.
