We went walking today in a known area where Northwesterns (T.ordinoides)hang out. It was a beautiful day, sunny and in the mid 50s. Here a few habitat pics. No snakes yet, still freezes at night.

They look like they're hanging out, waiting for something to go down.

Garters, such thugs. :D

Bill built a new toy for the snakes. It is a ladder with a hide base. It's made out of hemlock. They love it and Bill did a fantastic job on it!

Well I'm just about ready for the new arrival! Just a couple more comfort touches, a plant or 2 and maybe one more hide. Here it is so far.

Ok so, I think it's ready. I may put another plant next to the jungle gym later. I guess we'll see where she hangs out most. I have the tank 74 on the cool, 83 on the warm, and 55% humidity. We'll probably do a small uth after payday, but we'll see how she does with the tank as is first. I can't wait to meet her, and give her a name! The water dish is a really cool 3 in1 thing. It's a water dish a basking spot and a hide! It's really cool! In the hide is just aspen.

I like the water dish, good idea to combine the uses. I'm considering making "something" to raise some of our water dishes off the floor to provide an extra hide underneath.

Your temps sound great...about the same as what I have them set at for Hermes...and how he seems to like them. He really loves to hang out in his hanging plant by the red lamp...and since I started using the UTH a bit lately, I noticed he likes to come out and lie on top of the substrate over the UTH sometimes when it's cool at night. The humidity is great too...the tricky thing about these guys is that you really have no way of knowing when they are going to shed. I keep trying to identify some sort of observable sign in Hermes. I think that maybe his skin gets a bit tougher...a little dryer looking under the red light...and that he hides more...but I'm not sure. If he sheds soon, and I am right about these signs, I will let you know. I just try to keep the humidity up in his enclosure as much as I can. He eats right up to shedding too. The last shed, he had a tough time getting his shed off. He did well with the first one though. You have to be careful with these snakes though because they can have shedding problems.

chris-uk

The eyes do change before a shed, but it is a lot more subtle. They seem to get paler and the white circle around the iris becomes less distinct. It's certainly not something that you spot from the far side of the viv, and the last time I saw this with Binky I wasn't confident I was seeing pre-shed eyes, with hindsight I was able to be 100% certain though :p
The condition of the skin is an indication that a shed is on the way, and the amount of time hiding does increase. Binky will feed right up to her shed day, so feeding pattern is not a useful sign for her.

That really bites, Kat. I was so tired after Possum got here...I had to go to sleep! He has just been so content to lie in his hanging bush all day under his red lamp...something about these albinos and hanging bushes. I will be interested to see if your little girl likes to do the same thing. I am going to try to feed him in a little bit. We will of course need to see pics of your girl when you get a chance to take some!

A few pics of our outing today.

The first two are of a big girl I found in the middle of the clearing we were at. She was very long and had a giant head. Very pretty teal colored neck. The next one is a young NW male very calm and beautifully marked.

We went hiking today after I got off work. It was beautiful out, sunny and high 60's. We found 3 snakes, 1 NW, and 2 Pugets. Here are the Pugets. We didn't get a shot of the NW, it was too fast, but it was a big one.

I'm jealous.

The puget in the first two pics, did it have some sort of injury to below the neck or is it just bits of dirt/leaves/grass from the ground that makes it's skin look a bit odd?

It was an injury. There was limited visibility in the left eye as well. Almost looked like cataract. That girl is a trooper.

You should take her in Kat...she may have trouble making it in the wild. I am so jealous! I haven't seen one darn snake around here yet!

katach
04-23-2012, 10:37 AM
We have 10 already. She was a good weight and moved well. The injury was not fresh either. Where we found her was right next to a small pond, so I think she found a home with good food options. If we had more space I may have considered it, but I can't take them all home. :D

.....but I can't take them all home. :D

As much as we'd like to (and I'd be tempted if I could just walk out and find them). If she was a good weight with an old injury you made a good call, she's not struggling to survive.

I totally understand. I guess maybe God knows what he is doing by not making my area full of garters...my house would be like that snake house in Idaho because I would take every wayward snake in! :D

I only take them in when they seem to have mental conditions or injuries now... Like Derpy Scales.. He's the most special ed snake I have.

Forgot to post this really cool piece of wood we found while camping a few weeks ago. It looks like a helmet. We dried it and baked it and it's really cool! Check it out.
