View Full Version : She IS a girl . . . isn't she?

Finally got some decent pictures of Mishka's cloaca and tail area.
I have done the 'popping' test and results suggest female but I could be doing it wrong.
Soooooo I have posted them, can anyone tell from these pictures if she really is a girl?

Oh and here's a picture of her tail in context with her body:

I hate to say it but in my opinion you have a male there.
That tail stays way too wide for too long.
Your third photo is best for seeing the tail area.
Looks like a very typical male tail and body structure.

I agree...looking at that last photo, there is no tapering...I'd have to say male too. Popping is tricky and if you don't do it right, inconclusive...also, I think it's too risky...may hurt the snake if you don't know what you're doing. I don't recommend it. We can usually tell accurately from pics. I'm going with male. But if it makes you feel any better...I have heard the name Mishka used for a male :). I love that name. I had a husky named Mishka.
Pretty much like Izy. ;) I will not change his name though (Izy's OK, as long, as you don't try to call him with his full name, Izyda that is; Izydor sounds just fine and shorter version still fits). :)

Yes I agree, I guess I just hoped for a girl. I can now confirm that SHE is actually a HE, I tried the pooping test again and tried doing it slightly different and got it right. I love the name but not for a boy so I am renaming him (feels weird to say him) Maska, which is very similar to Mishka and if I ever get another (which I would love to) I could get a girl and their names would sound good together :)
Marnie? is your husky a boy or girl?

I don't know much about popping but I think it's done on very young snakes.
Injuries can occur if done when they are to big.

Yeah I read this but she is still only little, I mean HE is only little ha ha. I wanted to do it just so I knew if I was doing it right and wanted to do it right and just once while he is still small so I knew for sure of the sex.
I won't do it now unless it was impossible to tell other wise.
Does anyone have any pictures of a female so I can compare for future reference?

Check out this thread. It will help you fine tune your visual sexing skills.

Ar thank you!
I can see now. It's such a small and subtle difference that if you don't know what you're looking at then you can't tell but now I have had it explained I think I would be able to tell.
I feel like I have learnt something very valuable here today! THANK YOU :)

I have to ask, what do the numbers mean in your post's signature?
guidofatherof5

1.2.3
1-male
2-female
3-Unknown/unsexed

Sometimes the third number (unknown sex) is left out. Just to confuse you more. Anyway, now you can read a sig where the member lists their snakes. Nearly anyway, next thing to get your head around are the taxonomic names and abbreviations. :)

Ok, so what do yours mean? There are 0 in there? What does that mean?

It means that for each of three species we keep, none of them are unknown sex, we're confident that we have positively sexed them. I just leave the 0s because I think it is a more complete record. So, we have 3 female checkereds, a pair of Western Blacknecks, and a pair of Cuitzeos. A fine crop if ever there was one. :)

Ar ok, nice! I love the albino checkered garters, they are so beautiful. I'd love to buy one but no idea where from.
So if I were to do this mine would be: "1.0.0 - T. sirtalis parietalis called Maska" ?
And hopefully soon it could be:
1.0.0 - T. sirtalis parietalis called Maska
0.1.0 - T. marcianus called Mishka
?
EasternGirl

I don't know because the extra 0's are confusing me. I can tell you this: I have 1 female eastern garter and 1 male eastern garter ( T. s. sirtalis) so I write 1.1 T. s. sirtalis. And I have 1 male albino checkered garter, so I write 1.0 T. marcianus.

Well I guess how Chris' way works is he puts the quantity in the 1st, 2nd or 3rd place to display male(1st), female(2nd) or unknown(3rd)

You're getting the hang of this.
Albino Checkereds aren't terribly difficult to find. Blue Lizard reptiles had one last week, but they are over near Sheffield. Pinjohn may be able to point you at somewhere in the northwest as he's well acquainted with the shops around Liverpool (either that or he'll talk you out of an albino and into a normal checkered). If your local shops don't have one in stock I'm pretty sure they are on suppliers' stock lists most of the time, so could be ordered in. The other place to check is the Reptile Forum UK classified section, I've seen a handful of garters on there over the last few months, including a couple of albino checkered, obviously they may not be close enough to you to pick up but the classifieds are generally 50% cheaper than from a shop.

What do mean by "Ar" at the beginning of some of your posts? Is that a UK thing? Sorry I'm a bit out of the slang meanings.:o

HA HA it's not so much a UK thing, it's more of a Jodi thing. It's not really a word it's just what I say when I finally understand something, I suppose it should really be 'ah' but then people might think it's a typo of 'ha' and then I would appear crazy for laughing (and misspelling) all the time. Even my friends find it hard to understand my typing sometimes because I type it down how I think it in my head but then there's no pitch or tone difference to make it make sense.
If any of that makes sense, I hope that answers your question?

That Chris knows me so well, yes i have some young checkereds but not i'm afraid albino although a number of them come from an albino mother you are welcome to a couple should you wish [no charge] well almost...if you find your self at the donny show you could buy me a cup of coffee [just the one] as having two students still at home i know that finances are strained for you all at most times of the year.
I live in south liverpool if you were able to travel or i could grow them on and bring them to the donny show.
as i had two separate broods i am able to give you unrelated snakes.

Ok, now I want to know what "wonky" means.
in most cases it is intended to describe something that doesn't fit quite right, wobbly, or askew.

Yep...I just use it to mean something is off or not working right...like my computer went wonky..."started having technical issues". I have no idea where I picked it up.
