I thought I would start a thread about a much over-looked garter snake.
I'll get things started with my one and only ribbon, Shyblue (Thamnophis proximus orarius) Gulf Coast Ribbon

I thought I would give this a bump since some new members are keeping ribbons.
Would love to see some additional photos the the thread.

I need to get on to making some decent up to date pictures of all my snakes, but here are two older ones.
One of the girls;

Both are Proximus Proximus btw.
One of them is an easy eater while the other one is the finicky eater Ribbons are known for. I find it interesting that snakes within the same species, they're even sisters, can be so very different in character.

I can't say I've seen many young ribbons and someone correct me if I'm wrong but the snake looks too lean. No offense intended.
What is your feeding schedule?
ProXimuS

Oh no!
Well I've only had him for not even 2 weeks and today is the third time I've fed him. The first time I fed him I gave him two rosy red minnows(then soon after realized my mistake). Then about 4 days later i gave him 4 silversides, and today(4 days later) I gave him 4 more. Is that too much? Or does he just need more fat on him? I haven't gotten him any earthworms or pinkies yet.
He's my first snake so I'm still new to this:P

BTW, They seem to be relativley small silversides too. About maybe 1 or 1.5 inches, I don't know what the average size is for them.

Like I said before I don't know much about young ribbons and I don't feed silversides.
Scented pinkies will have more protein and might help put some size on.

I'll have to try those.
Another question: Are the pinkies sold alive? That scares me!

Some pet shop sell them alive and some frozen.

OO Awesome I'll have to call around then and find out who sells them frozen! How would you defrost them then?

I use a cup of warm water.

That is *extremely* thin, even for a ribbon snake, I would think. If the food is making a bulge in his stomach, it should help him gain a little weight slowly.

Today I successfully(about as successful as I will get) measured my little boy for the first time! He seems to be about 21 in. long, bigger than I was "guesstimating." Here are some pictures, I couldn't really get his whole body in the picture, so its sort of in sections :p

5319There's him not cooperating

5321And here's a girlfriend I found for him:p

Also update: He's been eating wonderfully since his shed. Hoping he will keep growing and put on some poundage:D (or maybe grammage:p)

ALSO is there a way you can estimate an age given the length. If so, any thoughts anyone?

I would say no. Anything would simply be a guess. Especially if it's wild caught.

Darn! I'd love to know his age:)

Steve I wanted to ask you about your Shyblue. I'm noticing Proximus' markings on his black sections seem to be almost a light blue color. Veeery pretty. I'm wondering does your girl have that color(I can't really see in her pic), or is that the common color for their little spots?
I just noticed the blue coloring the other day after he shed and had a belly full of fish:D

I agree that he looks a little thin...but it sounds like you are feeding him well...and he is eating, so hopefully he will plump up soon. Make sure you feed to his belly gets a nice little bulge...like was mentioned. I would feed him every 3 days until he gains some weight. About the girlfriend...are you going to put them in the same enclosure? You realize that a male and female will breed...you will most likely end up with many babies to care for. As someone who is just experiencing caring for babies for the first time...I must tell you it is quite a committment. Just something to be prepared for.

He's seemed to gain a little weight already I think(I hope:D)
About the bulge in the belly: How big of a bulge should he get? I give him enough for a slight bulge, but I'm afraid of over feeding him in one feeding.
Also about the girlfriend.... it was a rubber snake I've had for a few years :p I thought it was cute to "introduce" them for a second since they're about the same size. But I would really love the get him a friend(probably a boy because of the baby thing you mentioned:p)

That's just how ribbon snakes look, they have a longer thinner body than garter snakes. You'd be surprised how many people think ribbon snakes are just underweight garter snakes. A healthy ribbon snake is thin, but not bony thin.
