View Full Version : The Garter Snakes: Evolution and Ecology?

I was thinking about getting the garter bible (The Garter Snakes: Evolution and Ecology) and as I doubt its available in any shops looked online.
Is the going rate really anything from $59 on Amazon, up to $80-120 on other sites? Or around £60 from a UK based company. Has it become an out of print collector's book?
Or is there somewhere you can actually buy it at it's face-value? (Although having asked that I realise that the face-value of some of my academic text books would have been around this sort of price).
Thought I'd ask before I look for it seriously.

I paid about €80 for it about 5-6 years ago and the store I bought it from doesn't sell it anymore.

No...I got it used on amazon for $40.00...my copy is in great condition. http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0806128208/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&condition=used

Most of the "used" sellers won't ship to the UK. I can get Amazon to ship a used copy to us, so that's looking like the best option. I'll get Char to check whether she can order it in to the shop (there has to be some benefit to working in a bookshop) but being an old book from a US publisher it could be tough.
I'll find a copy eventually. :)

Oh that sucks. I guess I didn't think of that. Well would it be easier and cheaper if I ordered a used copy and shipped it to you and you sent me the money? Could we work that out some way?

Thanks for the offer Marnie, I'm guessing a little about the cost of you posting it to us, but I think that by the time that is factored in the cost will be up to the sort of price I can get it for on Amazon UK. I will bite the bullet and order it sometime soon, what I wanted to check is that there isn't somewhere in the US that you can pick it up for like $10 before I go and shell out $50.

gotta love your expectations...$10 hahahaha stop it Chris my sides are beginning to ache.
to be serious Chris this book is like no other that you have previously bought, whether size or content it is in a different class and with your medical/scientific bent you will probably get even more out of it than a lot of us ....PAY THE MONEY YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.[GUARANTEED].

AFTER CHECKING THE ABOVE COMMITMENT WITH MY SOLICITORS I HAVE BEEN ASSURED THAT SUCH AN UNDERTAKING WOULD BE DEEMED IN CIVIL LAW [AND POSSIBLY IN CRIMINAL LAW] TO BE A COMPACT UNALTERABLE AND NONE WITHDRAW'ABLE WITHOUT ATTRACTING THE MOST SEVERE FISCAL PENALTY'S.
In other words Christopher........ GOTCHER

After what John has done for us I'm happy to buy him more than one coffee. :) I would have done when we met at Donny, but when we met it was in the carpark and he had a flask of coffee (taxi drivers being prepared), then he disappeared into the crowds when we went back into the show hall. I really wanted to buy you a coffee at Donny John, honest guv.

You've got to move quick. He probably saw someone who owed him more coffee.
Must have rushed off to collect the coffee debt. :D

I can view the whole book digitally here; EBSCOhost: Garter Snakes : Evolution and Ecology (http://web.ebscohost.com/ehost/detail?sid=83a50934-2034-48cb-b9f2-a3ccd0899a1d%40sessionmgr13&vid=1&hid=25&bdata=JnNpdGU9ZWhvc3QtbGl2ZQ%3d%3d#db=nlebk&AN=15809)
Not sure if this link will work outside Michigan or the US. I was linked to it via my local library.

That is awesome...you know I used ebscohost for years as a student and when I was a professor. I had no idea you could view entire books on it. Would have saved me a lot of book rentals...of course, that may be a newer feature.

Oh, I thought everyone was already aware that an electronic version was online in a couple of places :). We like books in our house, so I want a hard copy. We like books so much that I got Char two copies of the same book for Christmas... one a limited edition signed by the author, and because it's a cookbook a copy she can take into the kitchen. :)

I just went to the link and was unable to view the book. "Sorry, this eBook is in use"
Apparently there is a limited number of viewers. Not sure what that number is though.

You can flick through the pages on Google books:
The garter snakes: evolution and ecology - Douglas Athon Rossman, Neil B. Ford, Richard A. Seigel - Google Books (http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=n2rW7E8_uJoC&printsec=frontcover&vq=Page+230&output=html_text)
Not the easiest way to read it though.

I've just received a spanking new, shrink-wrapped copy of the this "garter bible". I've only had a quick flick through the book, but it's a good size hardback, and I'm happy it was worth the (steep) price.
I think you need to know enough about garters to pick out the bits in the book that are outdated (e.g. some of the sub-species that are no longer recognised), but my initial thoughts are that it's a great book and I'll be reading it this evening. Possibly cover to cover.

I'm glad to hear you got your copy! I find myself referencing it while on the forum constantly. I keep it right in front of my computer. Occasionally if I need to attest to something, I put my right hand on the book...hold my left hand on a garter...and say..."I Marnie do swear to all garters...".
