My name is Amber and I am really considering getting a garter snake or 2 soon. My question is, are they illegal in ohio? I cant find anything about them in ohio and ive heard they are legal to keep but not to sell? So I figured id see if anyone here knows haha :) Ive always loved these snakes and considering they will eat fish and worms, they have won me over(I cant feed rodents, too sad for me to do that. bugs worms or fish im OK with though lol)

Welcome to the forum family! First off you'll want to take a look at our care sheet. I also found a site that may be helpful to answer the legal question. You have come to the best forum on the web. Feel free to post any questions you may have.

It looks like according to Ohio law you can have an Eastern garter or a Butler's garter ( you can own up to four)...but you are not allowed to own any Radixes....these are all specific subspecies of garters. Interesting...because I have never seen such specific laws before. You also may not bring out-of-state snakes into the state. Also...when feeding rodents to garter snakes...you feed them frozen/thawed rodents...not live rodents. But garters also eat certain types of fish and earthworms. See the caresheet for more info on feeding.

Welcome. It looks like the laws in Ohio will stop you becoming a garter addict. If you can only have 4 and can't bring in any from out-of-State...
Interesting that they prohibit keeping radix, but allow Butlers and Easterns. I thought radix were common as muck (sorry Steve :) ) and certainly more common than Butlers. I wonder what the thinking was when that law was drafted.

From the page I was looking at...Radix are on the endangered list in Ohio. Yes...up to four as long as they are easterns or Butler's garters. As far as bringing snakes in from out of state, we have the same law in Delaware...something about bringing out of state species in or something. I wouldn't worry about it if you want to say...purchase an eastern from a breeder out of state and bring it into Ohio...they just don't want a bunch of out of state species being introduced into the state in the natural habitat. Here is the link to what I was reading. It is the revised Ohio law concerning wildlife possession effective Jan 1, 2011: Reptiles & Amphibians Licensing and Regulations (http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/Default.aspx?tabid=15493)

Yeah....boas and pythons aren't allowed in Delaware but everyone has them. They sell them here...it's very odd.

Ribbons have a reputation for being biters, don't they? I've not kept them myself, but have read in several places about ribbons and water snakes being partial to chewing down on a bit of finger, or hand. Plenty of folks around here that have the odd ribbon if you want advice aft you give in and go back for it :).
I think you should hold out for a garter though, unless you're planning on getting the garter as well.

Ribbons aren't really known for biting, just being really jumpy.

Garters would probably be a better choice as ribbons are notoriously jumpy therefore less attractive as pets.... however, on the biting note, the bites from garter and ribbons are nothing, as long as you don't pull away suddenly which can injure them and make the bites worse.
