So it's looks as though there is a good chance that Selena is actually a male and that I may have baby snakes in the future...if you follow the thread: http://www.thamnophis.com/forum/general-talk/9695-could-possible.html..that I put up last night...you will see what I mean...there was some undeniable snakey courting and mating behavior going on between Selena (now being referred to as Biebs) and Cee Cee last night...please put in your 2 cents!! OH...and your future orders for Eastern babies...cause I do not have room for babies!!!

I'm sure there will be a lot of users who would be more than happy to take care of them...

Myself included, I don't live nearby, alas. :(

Honestly, if you didn't see her dragging him around and all there was, was courting... There likely won't be babies. Cant get pregnant from simple foreplay ;)

Famous last words before "honey, we gonna have a baby!".

Sure, if things get wild. Can put it this way, you cant get pregnant from a simple massage.... Because that's what I imagine the males are trying to do... Massaging their backs until they cant resist their boyish charms. :D

And then there was my son....lol..just kidding! How long would I have to care for the babies before I could safely ship them to new owners?

Bart

Look at the bright side, Marnie - now you have a roommie for Hermes. :D

kibakiba
12-02-2011, 08:09 AM
I'd say get them eating regularly before shipping them out, that and about 3 or 4 months. That way you'd know which ones are really healthy, and which might not make it. That's just me, though. I think most people get them eating and then ship ;)

I think I would have to do that unfortunately...I don't know how in the world I will take care of a bunch of babies. Of course there is the other factor that the last time Cee Cee was gravid she had thirty stillborns...

kibakiba

She'll be healthier and happier without that again.

Selena/Bieber is a lot bigger than Hermes if he's courting, right? That makes them unsuitable roomies for now. Looks like you could be looking at a 3 viv setup soon ;) At least with an infant viv, a male viv and a female viv you can start adding more without worrying about cross-breeding. Then you can add the breeding viv, another couple of infant vivs...

EasternGirl
12-02-2011, 01:25 PM
Good grief! Well...I have another small viv as I just moved Hermes into Cee Cee and Bieber's old tank...so I have a 10 gal...I wouldn't put the Biebs in with Hermes yet, don't worry...plus, I don't have the heart to separate Cee Cee and Biebs. But the thing of it is...I know nothing of caring for baby snakes...and I just don't have the money and time to care for them...I would have to find them homes ASAP. My mother is going to kill me...I live with my family right now as I am a poor nursing student!!

I don't know how easy it is to find homes for sirtalis in Delaware, but you're looking at taking care of babies for around 3 months, if you aren't in a position to do that I'd find the heart to separate the two of them. It's quite possible that they haven't actually locked up yet, so you may not end up with babies yet.
We've had do similar with our Cuitzeo pair because the female isn't big enough to breed yet. Vlad is most put out to be in a temporary RUB (new home should be delivered on Monday), but at the end of the day it's for their own good. We will put the two back together next year when she's big enough to breed and we have more space.

Then it would be best to separate them. If you cant care for the outcome, don't allow it to happen.

Yes, if you cannot care for babies born, then most definately separate them. place their tanks beside one another but yes do separate. It sounds like you caught them in time. Don't let it go any further unless you are prepared to care for those babies for 3 months, and even longer if you cant find them all homes. Also, what if they need vet care etc. You have to think bout whats best for your snakes, even if it makes you and them sad for awhile. Its worth it in the end. I too have a male and female housed together, they are only babies right now, but there is going to come a day probably sooner then later where i will have to separate them, and it will break lil Indy's heart cause he is very attached to Lexi, but it would be for their own good, safety and health. It would be like putting my stallion in with my mares and then saying well but they want to be together but i cant afford to look after a foal for a yr. Something similar did happen. i thought i was safe putting my stud with my two mares last winter, well guess what, she cycled one more time after she should have stopped, and we had a very late in the season foal born. Not good, but it was my fault and now i have to do all i can to ensure that baby grows up happy. and healthy which is going to be a constant struggle in the winters we have here. Its going to be alot of extra cost i wasnt counting on but i assumed that responsibility to save my self some time last winter. lol good plan that was huh... anyhow back on topic.. listen to everyone, separate them now before she does become gravid. A lil discomfort and possibly cost now will be saving you tons of time and money later. Take it from someone who has been there lol.. You have some beautiful snakes by the way.

Oh...don't blame me...my son is a Biebs fan...lol...what can I do??? He's my kid... He named the snake. (Great pic btw...lol). Anyway...I know...I hear you guys...I'm going to fix up another 20 gal that I have and put Biebs in there. I talked to Steve on Skype for a while about the whole thing today and I will take care of the babies if there are babies until I can find homes for them. But, I will separate the two of them and when Hermes is big enough I will put Biebs in with Hermes and get a female roomie for Cee Cee and then everyone will be happy.

When I was trying to decide on a garter snake (or two) Jason had a pair of the radix. I don't feel equiped to do babies yet either, so I went for all boys! Some day down the road I can get a female or two. (Maybe next year when all the list members have babies!)

EasternGirl
12-02-2011, 10:20 PM
Well...if I have babies...you can have a female if you want another eastern. Yeah...well, I thought I was putting two girls together...we all thought Biebs was a girl when we originally sexed her based on pics... I am going to try to get the other tank ready tomorrow to move Biebs...I think I found locations for all the tanks in my little house...and I'm going to look into getting a shelving unit for at least two of the tanks.

You know what just occurred to me...is Biebs old enough to successfully mate? I don't know exactly how old he is but he was young when I found him last November...how old do snakes have to be to successfully mate and reproduce?

If he's courting he's able. Loaded and ready to go.

EasternGirl

Okay...just checking...I'll get working on the big move...

Bart
12-03-2011, 02:26 AM
I wouldn't wait if I were you. The can lock up any second - the faster you'll separate them, the bigger chance she'll not be gravid. I would put a male (I have to agree with Jesse about it's name) anywhere until new viv is ready. In my opinion it's already too late, but, oh well...

EasternGirl
12-03-2011, 03:58 AM
I'm getting the viv ready as fast as I can...I have other things like my family that I have to tend to...I am prepared to deal with the babies if they come. After talking to Steve, I decided that I just have to "man up" and do what has to be done and take care of the babies if there are babies. Okay guys...I am sorry the snake is named after Justin Bieber...my kid named the snake...I've been calling the snake Biebs for a year...it seems weird to try to call him anything else at this point. I think everyone is going to have to just accept the fact that the snake is named Biebs and move on ;). Okay..how about this...a compromise...everyone likes Bones...right? The snake was called Selena when it was a girl....how about I try calling him Seely...like Seely Booth? Is that better?

I don't really care. You don't have to apologize. I was joking.

EasternGirl
12-03-2011, 10:57 AM
It's all in good fun you guys...I'm not upset or anything...I didn't really like the name anyway...Seely is a much better name..and I still call the snake Biebs...it's all good ;). I was really just playing around too.

It was a snake mistaken for a girl. I can see the connection.

EasternGirl
12-03-2011, 03:37 PM
Okay...it's done....Cee Cee and Seely are separated. I moved Seely into his new digs. I swear they look depressed...but I know it's for their own good and for everyone's benefit in the long run. Now I just have to hope she is not already gravid. I told the depressed looking little Romeo and Juliet of the snake world that they could have supervised daily visits...as long as there is no hanky panky!! ;).

Bart
12-03-2011, 03:38 PM
Tell this to Izy... I would swear she's missing her girlfriend. ;(

EasternGirl
12-03-2011, 03:44 PM
I know...Cee Cee is just lying there with her head on her little log looking all sad...and Seely is searching all over his new viv for Cee Cee...I seriously feel like I just broke up Romeo and Juliet! Lol...

Bart...how is Kleo??

Bart
12-03-2011, 04:03 PM
She's lying in her apartment, doing nothing... If she was a mammal I would keep her in my hands all the time. Obviously, she isn't so I don't know what to do to make her happy. I don't know what I should do... I'm a mess...

EasternGirl
12-03-2011, 04:12 PM
I've been thinking about her all day. Well, when Sammy the snake that I tried to rescue was dying I just held him until he passed...I believe Chantel did that with one of her snakes too. You could hold her...unless you think that would make her more uncomfortable. I would try to keep her warm and keep an eye on her...just make her as comfortable as you possibly can. I guess it's really all you can do at this point....hope that this passes and if not and it is her time, just knowing that you loved her and made her as comfortable as you could in the end is what matters most.

kibakiba

I was holding Speckles when she died, but I knew she only had a few minutes to live anyways.

EasternGirl
12-03-2011, 04:39 PM
I thought I remembered you saying that...I was holding Sammy most of the time..he was just so sick and he seemed happy sitting in my hand.

EasternGirl
12-03-2011, 06:50 PM
Well...I would have guessed that Seely would be the depressed one and that Cee Cee would be happy to finally have a minute alone without him on her back. But to my surprise...Seely seems pretty happy for the most part...he's been very active..exploring his new home and interacting with me through the glass...he did have a brief angry fit and tossled his substrate around...lol. Cee Cee, on the other hand, has been looking all sad...just sitting in the same spot in her little log all day with her head down, staring out of the tank...:(. I think I'll go feed her some pinkies and fish to cheer her up and tomorrow I'll let her have a visit with Seely.

I know she probably isn't but I just feel bad anyway...she ate a bunch tonight and looked perfectly fat and happy when she was finished:).
