Found this old thread:

Starting at post #17

;) There actually was a report of a south American population of garters that have made the move towards raiding the eggs from birds nest in one of my issues of 'The Garter Snake' (EGSA newsletter). Thamnophis dasypeltissima is restricted to a network of islands and was first reported in 2007 on the Tauranga Atol and there have only been few biological observations of this species so far.

I'm confused.. Why is it an April Fool's joke? I probably just missed a joke or something :p

Because the species doesn't exist. Because it's not a valid scientific name. Because the story was published in the April issue of the EGSA newsletter. And because the "person" behind the "story" is the same as in another classic hoax: Rhinogradentia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhinogradentia)

A wiki is a great source of information if you already know enough about a subject to know what is wrong. :-)

My favorite are the dates on classical portraits. I've found about seven so far that were painted before the person was even born.

Thamnophis dasypeltissima....an egg eating Thamnophis from an island...how crazy is that?

I heard about this quite some time ago and it was my understanding that it was a hoax or a joke.

EDIT: oops. I see you figured that out already. And cut wiki a little slack. The article on Rhinogradentia plainly says that it's a hoax by a fake naturalist. Not their fault if people read it and take it seriously.

wiki: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit. Notice the "anyone" part. In other words, it's often full of erroneous information.
