Hi everyone I thought i would make a thread for updates for Indy and Lexi. The title on the old thread just didnt seem to fit anymore. I hope its okay to make a new one. If not please tell me how to delete the old one.

Indy and Lexi ate for the first time for me today and I will post pics of their first meal in their new home. Much to my relief they took the pinkie and worm, well 3/4 of the pinkie and 3/4 of the worm between the two of them.i have scaled down their tank until they get bigger, they now have a smaller pool, their bend a log hide and a repti tree i picked up for them. i also took out some bedding so i can find them more easily but enough that they can still hide.

Thank you Steve. I hope they grow up to be as big as speckle:)

Now for my question of the day, Has anyone ever used those hamster tunnels to make a play structure for their snakes? If so did they like it? Im thinking of buying some to create a fun experience for the babies. safer going inside the tube up high then on logs. I have seen they stick sooo well to plastic so slight down hills and uphills should be no problem, no steep drops i know, dont want them to get hurt.

Interesting idea.
My bigger snakes don't like round tubes.
I think it's hard for them to move because it's not a flat surface.
Keep in mind they are going to poop in there and gladly do it. :D

dieselbaby
10-11-2011, 03:38 PM
well those plastic hamster tubes easily come apart, and wash up pretty easy cause ummm hamsters pee on everything( i used to raise some lol)

My mom and I wanted to do that, and link it around the house so the snakes could explore the house without losing them. I decided i didn't want to risk losing my babies in case of a malfunction

thats a neat idea, but i was just wanting to do it "inside" their enclosure. These guys are far too small to get loose on me id never find em again lol

i never thoughnt to use those. I used to raise rats and they had those also. I love that idea. They are easy to clean and right now my babies like the toilet paper and paper towel tubes so thosse shouldnt be a problem. Cant wait to see pics. Great idea. Also ur snakies are very pretty.

I get paid again on the 20th, so im going to pick up a circle set to start with, they go in make a big circle and come back out, if they like that then i will buy a bunch and make a cool, upper level. I will wrap vines around the outside in case they decide to go ontop the tunnels, that way they have something to sorta hang onto. Cant wait to do it.

Tonight will be feeding night again, but here are some new pics of today after i put some new goodies in their tank for them, and they obliged me by exploring most of the new stuff, except the snake cave, they havent discovered that the opening is on the top yet.

2nd feeding went pretty well except lexi tried to eat indy, well it started with her trying to steal food from his mouth and when he ran away she attacked him. Once i got that broke up all was well. Lexi ate almost a whole pinkie by herself tonight, i been calling her lexapig lol she is a very very good eater, good thing i had indy in for food first lol he mostly wanted worms this time, and wasnt overall interested in the pinkies, lexi though OMG she was making laps around the feeding tank cleaning up all the pinkie parts and a couple worm pieces. she licked it clean you could say. i let them slowely slither out of their feeding tank and into the snake den where its nice and toasty warm, and i had dampened the bedding some earlier today. They seem snug as a bug in a rug in there now.

Keep an eye on their mouths if they locked. Keep an eye on them while feeding, if they end up fighting over food, the mouth can get infected and end up killing the snake if you don't treat it.

dieselbaby
10-14-2011, 09:02 PM
i checked both of them over all looks fine, i think next time i will do one at a time though i was scared for indy he is a lil smaller then lexi. Thats why i put him in first, but next time i will just let him finish up and take him out before i put lexi in. she was very aggressive. To break the fight up, i tickled her head with a small unused paint brush, it did the trick. I didnt see any actualy biting of eachother just the food, and they rolled around a bit. but i will check on them to make sure all is well before i go to bed, and when i get up tomorrow.

I know i had e-mailed you but at the time I had my son on my lap so typing too much was difficult... he wants to type too lol. I usually watch them as there eating and if they get close or have grabbed the same piece i usually tap their heads until one or both let go. But there is nothing wrong with feeding separate. I'm glad your having fun with them.

dieselbaby
10-15-2011, 09:21 PM
Thats quite alright and i was watching them and used an unused small paint brush to tickle lexi's head and once she quit i scooted her to the other side . I just want to make sure she doesnt do that to him again. she was about to strike his tail as well at one point which is when i took him out and stole some food for him and let him finish up in the deli cup i had handy. so next time i will just let him feed first, and place him in some warm water in the deli cup to clean up, and put lexi in to eat, and place him back in the tank to find a comfy nappy spot, and then do the same with lexi when she is done.

checked both snakes bout 6 times today still no evidence of any injuries, hope it stays that way.

Most definately having fun with them. They have their own little personalities, and lexi is such a piggy lol

Thanks again Nick for allowing me to adopt these two, they are awesome babies. Monday night i will feed them again, my kids have told me i am NOT allowed to feed the snakes unless they are here to watch them lol they just love seeing them strike their food and swallow it. They just refuse to help mom cut up the pinkies and the worms is all lol...

dieselbaby
10-15-2011, 09:23 PM
i forgot to add there was some rolling around just after she grabbed the food from his mouth and he tried to get away. she is the more aggressive one, so i will just feed him first is all. No biggie.

I think i know the answer already but you guys are the experts. I think my Lexi is getting ready to shed, she refused her between meal snack tonight and her eyes have a blueish tinge, picture will be posted. What should the humidity be until she is done shedding in the tank? its at 53% now. 31413142

chris-uk
10-24-2011, 02:54 AM
The eyes do look blue-ish, if her skin is dull with a blue-ish hue to her belly, and she's off her food you can probably expect to find a shed skin in the next few days. Humidity of around 50% is about right, but also provide her with a higher humidity area - we have sphagnum moss in our cold hides (coconuts too, like yours) and make sure that is kept moist (not wet, just moist). That gives her somewhere more humid to go if she wants more moisture. We actually keep the moss damp all the time, but become more vigilent when we think one is about to shed.
Another thing to have in there is to make sure there are some hard rough places that she can start her shed. Two of ours have an aquarium log with a rough underside which they aways use, they squeeze under it and anchor the shed, then squiggle out of the old skin. The others have couple of rocks, although yesterday one of them in that viv decided to use the plastic "branches" of the fake greenery in her viv, literally climbed to the highest point and achored her skin between a couple of bits of plastic then shed as she slithered back down the "twigs".

I hope you're lucky and see the shed happening. I've only caught the start of one (spotted it as I was heading out the door to a meeting), and the last 2 minutes of another shed. It's a great process to watch.

I'd keep the humidity at 60%-70% or keep a large water dish in the tank, big enough to let the snake submerge itself , that'll help him/her get the skin off.

dieselbaby
10-24-2011, 09:25 AM
Thanks, i figured the humidity was okay, i mist lightly twice a day. They have a snake cave with moss inside, has a hole in the top to go inside and its warmer and more humid in there since i too always keep the moss moist. They have some logs to rub on, and the rough coconut hide, plus the base of their climb is a bit rough. I will be keeping an eye on her. I havent noticed a blue hue on her belly, but he scales look awefully dull compared to her brother. She is a piggy at dinner time, so she is probably overdue for a shed. She eats like a horse. maybe ill go find some rough stones out in the yard, wash em and put them in there for her, just for variety.

They do have a water dish big enough for both to swim in at the same time... Okay on humidity ill try and raise it, our house is dry so it sucks the humidity out.. I do mist a couple times a day and it brings it up to 70% then back down to bout 53%. inside the snake cave its about 70% though, i keep the moss moist always, and with the heat mat under it its nice and warm and humid in there, ive stuck the probe inside from time to time to make sure it doesnt get too hot. They like to go nap in there after dinner. Plus they also have what i call the rooting bowl. its one of their shipping cups, with moist soil in it that i place left over food in overnight. (lexi loves to go back 3 or 4 hours later and root around for the leftovers) Indy has started doing this too. Their substrate is a mix of cocohusk and reptibark for different textures. Hoping the shed goes well. If not i have a shedding box ready to go, with rough face cloth, ventilated lid, and just needs moistening and a snake..

Okay got another question....

Have any of you ever put in a lava rock for the snakes to rub on to help with shedding. Lexi hasnt shed yet, and I have some lava rock from New Mexico that i picked up when i used to drive truck. Would it be safe (after cleansing) or would it cut them?

Looks like she decided to anchor the shed on the plastic of the plant. One of ours did the same thing on her last shed.

I can't tell from the photo, are both eyecaps there, and the tip of the tail? When they shed checking that the eyecaps have been shed properly is the most important thing to do.

yep the very tip of the tail is there, and both eye caps are there as well i removed the skin it came apart in 3 pieces as i tried to get it out. it was one complete piece in the tank. the head part is so cool, the mouth part is open lol my youngest finally got brave and touched it, so now she is going to bring it to school tomorrow to show everyone.

I discovered lava rock can be fun for the snakes when you hide snacks in the air holes.. i stuffed some egg pieces in there, and some worm pieces and they are loving pulling the lil pieces out. Hunting around the rock..

So it was an easy, successful shed. :)

We have a couple of rocks in one of our vivs, not lava rock, but rough. The two in that viv love climbing on the rocks and posing like mountaineers.

feeding went off without a hitch tonight. they both settled in for the night now.. I've switched from lights on 24/7 to a daytime/nighttime system for lighting and it seems to be working to make them active during the day and nap at night. Love the undertank heaters for helping maintain a good temp even thru the night, with only one overhead light going.. They get a uva/uvb light during the day, and a blue light at night.

Update: Lexi the female, has now shed twice since i got her and is just over 13 inches long now and a porker lol she never misses an opportunity to eat. Indy the male is quite a bit smaller in length and diameter. I can easily tell them apart now. He eats good but is not a piggy like Lexi is. I havent gotten an accurate length on him but if i would have to guess i would say about 10 inches give or take a bit. He has only shed once since being here. All sheds were clean one piece sheds complete with eye covers and tail tips. Lexi's new favorite spot to sleep is on the very top of her middle plant near the lid, or on the mid level log, or right after a big meal she camps out in the snake cave for a few hours first. Indy is still extremely skittish and prefers to stay hidden most of the time, Lexi is alot more outgoing and loves to explore. Will post some updated pics.

Yeah...I just love that viv...I went and looked at the reptibark for my snakes...but I don't know if they would like it in terms of burrowing. It really looks nice but my snakes tend to like substrate that they can burrow and make tunnels in...I think I'm going to stick with the carefresh for now...even though it doesn't look very natural. Do your snakes burrow in the reptibark?

dieselbaby
12-06-2011, 06:49 PM
Thanks for the compliments. I try and keep it as natural looking as i can. When i first got them they did burrow in it all the time, for burrowing just make it thicker, and actually i use a combination of moistened coco husk and reptibark it keeps my humidity better in these winter months when the air is so dry. I think i am blessed in the fact that even on the top of the plant where they like to nap, they dont try and escape. They cant but i have yet to even see them try. They seem quite happy in their home and love to climb up their plants and along their log, and they adore the snake cave the most. They do still "root" under and thru the bedding, i dont have it thick enough for burrowing really. I put just enough in to cover the bottom of the tank, for burrowing if you doubled what i use they could burrow nicely.

EasternGirl

Happy 2012 Everyone!!!

sorry i havent been around in nearly a month but it couldnt really be helped. I had a bomb dropped on me so to speak. I rent my house and farm and well apparently my landlords have not paid their mortgage since may 2011( inspite of trying to get rent earlier then the first of the month up until i was notified by the bank not to pay them anymore) Dec 1 2011 i was notified that the bank now owned my home and that come January it would be put on the market and sold... Well they dropped a bomb on me xmas eve and listed my house for sale xmas eve of all times, so needless to say my holidays were ruined by strangers nosing around my home boxing day thru new years. Not only was it stressing my animals out but i was feeling stressed and violated to some degree afterall none of this was my choice. So once i got over being p*ssed right off at the whole thing, the realization set it that im about to be homeless, my kids, pets, and livestock were about to be homeless in the dead of winter.

Long storey short, the house is sold, and by some freak of nature i have found another farm to rent, the odds were about a billion to one of finding a farm to rent to begin with but unheard of in the dead of winter. So over this month and feb. i will be painting, and moving in.

Lexi and Indy are doing great, growing like little weeds, Indy has bout caught up to lexi is length and girth and has really blossomed into a wonderful snake. He has become very curious and seems to enjoy interacting with us through the glass. We are enjoying them immensely. over the next week or so i hope to get caught up on the forum happenings, im sure i missed a ton. Huggs and a Happy New Year to everyone!!!!

Good to hear the snakes are doing well, after you've had such a crappy holiday season. But more importantly, great news that you found somewhere else to move to. I've been in a similar position twice when my landlords have decided to sell up unexpectedly when my lease came for renewal, but at least it was at the end of my lease and I didn't have to move anything more than a cat...
I hope the move goes well for you.

I was so angry to read the way you where treated, angry but not surprised, i had better not start on about banks or i will be here all day, if politicians cared a fig about the people who elect them then there would be laws preventing banks acting in such a cavalier, heartless way towards the innocent folks caught up in their business deals the charge should be ....ACTING WITH CALLOUS DISREGARD TOWARDS A FELLOW HUMAN BEING. It should be a corporate charge aimed at the people at the top who run the banks......... ba****ds..... going down stairs now to have a coffee and give my blood pressure time to settle down.

Wow, That really must of sucked. I've been there before though... I'm a firm believer in 'Everything happens for a reason' It may be sh*ty now but I think it'll probably be for the better, maybe now you'll have decent honest landlords n even though somethings may be a compromise it'll probably be way worth all the drama n BS. Chin up. Some call me an optimist, I say Realist. lol The hardest steel has to go through the hottest fire to become the strongest. Not a lot good comes from the easy life, The more crap you have to deal with in life, the stronger you are. .. I know, doesn't change the fact that some people need a (as a friend of mine puts it...) Thankyou all for your well wishes and im sure it will turn out fine. I tried not to get upset but the real estate agent i got stuck with was a real b*tch and did not take to kindly to me exercising the few rights that i did have. Such as demanding 24hrs notice to having strangers invade my home and privacy. I understand where the bank is coming from and that business is business. I blame the real estate agent, and i blame my landlords. They had no excuse not to pay their mortgage. My rent was always paid on time or early, all they had to do was put it in the bank and it was paid for and then some, however they chose to spend it on booze and drugs instead of the rental property. They are the ones that i blame. They even had the gull to call me in December after i called them and told them they would not be getting rent for december as the bank notified me that i was to pay the bank and to call the police if the landlords showed up on the property, and they were whining about not having christmas money. I mean hello, you just basically ensured that i would be thrown out onto the street and you have the nerve to call me and ask me to go against the bank, and send you the rent money, so you can buy your kid xmas presents and get xmas booze... No i dont think so.

Its going to be next month now before i can pay for the two puget sound garters from Scott, and i cant get as many now as i had planned, i will have to stick with just the two. The new house is smaller so not as much room for reptile tanks. Least i can still get my 2 very much wanted pugets. The two checkereds Indy and Lexi are doing amazing, they are both approx 18 inches long now and thriving. All our pets are my sanity and salvation.

Unfortunately, our little red eared slider hatchling succumbed to his pneumonia just after christmas, despite daily medications for it. My daughter misses him terribly so i promised this summer we would get her another turtle, only a bigger turtle so we dont have to go through this again with a hatchling.

Can't wait til the pugets are born and ready to be shipped and they arrive here. I have to send scott an email yet too and let him know what happened and that my payment will be bout 3 weeks late for the babies. Least its a prepay and the babies arent sitting there waiting.

anyhow, off to go do some more painting. Have a great day everyone!

I think you're dead right to have exercised your right to 24h notice, I certainly would have done. And if I bumped into the landlord on the street...

Enjoy the painting and look forward to the Pugets.

I'm sorry that you had to go through all of that and I am really glad that you found another place to live. I'm also sorry about the turtle passing. I believe in karma. That real estate agent will be in a similar situation some day and need some help and understanding from someone and she won't get it...then she will think back to how she treated you and realize how crappy it was. Glad to hear the snakes are doing well.

I'm so sorry you are having to go through this. That is just aweful!! I'm glad you found a place though. Will you be able to keep all your animals and livestock?
Glad to hear Lexi and Indy are doing so well for you.
You will love having Pugets! They have a great personality. They can get really greedy at food time, and are a feisty lot, but they are beautiful and wonderful to keep.

Hey ya'll

Well all moved and settled into the new place, and looks like spring is finally arriving here. Cant wait until the snow melts and i see what my land looks like, looks like it might be a good place to find some garters in the wild for us to check out (and keep our dog away from). Looking forward to importing our pugets and summer. Lexi and Indy are doing great, growing like weeds. They seemed to have switched personalities on me, Indy my male, is now alot more outgoing and curious and less fearful then my female Lexi. They are settled into their new home as well as all my other fin, feathered, and furred creatures. Sorry I havent been around much, but moving was rough especially since at about the same time i managed to pinch not one but two nerve bundles in my neck and have been in constant pain. But i have a great chiropractor who is helping me through that and i can type again YAY. Ill post a new pic of lexi and indy's tank set up and of indy exploring his new tree.. Lexi was content to hide behind it.

Happy Early Spring Everyone.

first two pics are of the tank sitting ontop my electric fireplace, 3rd is indy pretending he is a tree snake, and last is lexi hiding.

Oh and by the way, those of you who said this could be a blessing in disguise, were very right. Even though the house is small, its warm and comfy. The land is great, close to town, and my two girls absolutely love their new school, and the kids have been very friendly towards them, not stuck up like at their last school. we are all very happy here, and our landlord doesnt seem like a jacka$$.

Sounds like things are working out great for you...that is wonderful! The snakes look great and the enclosure looks beautiful, as always. My albinos love to pretend they are tree snakes! Thanks for the update.

thanks.. yeah mine do too you cannot tell them they are NOT tree snakes. My two spend as much time up in the plants and climbing things i give them, as on the lower level. Its amazing how good they are at climbing and figuring out how to navigate around all the fun stuff i put in for them to play on. They never disappoint when i buy them something new.

My easterns are not quite as big on hanging out in the trees...they like to climb around and explore...but my albinos will sit in the hanging plants all day long and sleep in them...my snow actually just shed up in his hanging plant! I joke around and say that they think they are venomous jungle vipers!

Love the tank! I showed Bill so we can get more green in ours. I'm so glad to hear that you and the kiddos are settling so nicely. I hope your nerve pain gets better, I know what you're going through. Welcome back!

Good to have you back and I'm happy to read that the move went well (other than the neck problem). Big bonus if you discover a wild garter den on the land. :)

lol mine love to hang out up top, but their very favorite spot is in their snake cave especially when its shedding time, i keep it warm and moist in there, you cant tell but there is a heat mat under the tank under the snake cave. Keeps it nice and toasty and humid for them, and its a fav spot after a big meal.

I can relate to the jungle viper thing.. i have to laugh at these two when they go around trying to rattle their tails like rattlers, and then do their cobra impressions, and then of course the tree snake impressions..

Thanks! I love having the green in the tank, it just looks more natural and they seem to enjoy it immensely, the tree to the left is actually fake, its not real its a resin tree i got on sale at petsmart. but they love it.

as for the nerve pain, its hard cause i have so much to do on a daily basis that requires lifting so its going to be a slow process, but im on the mend.. Thanks for the welcome back..

The den would be a huge bonus, with slow movers lol so i can sit, have some coffee and watch them explore the area.. maybe find a really cool looking one. We will see and i will be sure to post pics if i see any..

My easterns have a cave over a heat mat too that they really love. That is funny about the tail rattling...that, I have never seen with any of mine...however, my snow, Possum, does an uncanny cobra impression...he likes to lift his head up and then tuck it back and coil and strike at the glass...he's so little and sweet in nature, that it's really hysterical!

Sounds like pussy cat that thinks he's a tiger. :)
It must be interesting to see, why don't you just setup a webcam pointing at Possum? ;)

Hmm...I guess I could do that on my laptop. I'm going to try to get some more videos of him soon too...he will usually do the cobra thing if I put my finger up the glass when he comes near it. :)

i used to do that alot put mine on webcam, people on my messenger think im nuts but thats okay. i must have over a thousand pic of my two doing silly things, and eating and lazing around.

mine do the cobra thing when you wiggle your finger by the glass too all set to strike. Garters are just absolutely awesome snakes. They seem so smart, and curious, and i think they like me.. They greet me at the glass when i get home from being out, but then again shortly after they start begging for food lol so maybe its the services i provide lol

btw possum is a cool name!

Garters really are awesome. Thanks..I named him Possum because he has a neurological disorder and he likes to turn upside down a lot. He slithers upside down sometimes, and sleeps upside down sometimes too. Then, of course, the pink eyes...But he is so cute and interesting. You can see a little video of him under my Marnie's Snakes thread. If you watch really close, you can see him do his cobra pose for one brief moment in the middle of the video!
