Some of the first book can be read on-line. The second and third book can be purchased from Amazon.com for next to nothing.

I got a couple of books shipped from Amazon US (only available through the Marketplace in the UK at much higher prices). This one is OK, a few old bits of advice, but generally good:
3070
Amazon.com: Garter Snakes and Water Snakes (Herpetocultural Library, The) (9781882770793): David Perlowin: Books (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/188277079X)

This one is a kids book:
3071
Amazon.com: Garter Snakes (Edge Books: Wild About Snakes) (9781429662574): Heather L. Montgomery: Books (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1429662573)

All in all, I wouldn't say either is a "good read", but the first is a good addition to my bookshelves (me and Char have somewhere between 1000 and 1500 books on our shelves). I'd be interested to see what books others recommend, so I'll check out those suggestions from Steve.

Yes, Barron's Reptile Keeper's Guides: Garter and Ribbon Snakes, by Bartlett and Bartlett...great book! And also, Quick and Easy Garter & Ribbon Snake Care, by Philip Purser. I think I found both on Amazon, used for a couple of bucks. Great care books...

here are some of the garter books i have come across, there are some more about the place but i cant lay my hands on them at the moment.
one of them i cant find is breeding snakes in captivity it is from about the 1970's and would be considered very non pc as it details some of his experiments in garter crosses the author is Robert riches if i remember correctly, and he also deals with natrix and if i remember correctly he also crosses them, writing this has whetted my appetite to read this book again so i shall probably spend a large portion of the next few days looking for it.

I really enjoy all of them, even if a couple are children's books.

Us garter fans are odd anyways, who else gets excited to see a U-haul truck, plans vacations around snake dens, hangs posters like a teenager in their room, thinks "I wonder if this will look good in my snakes enclosure" while shopping in thrift stores, Buys tubs of night crawlers but does not use them as fishing bait & thinks "I wonder if these are safe to eat" when looking at peoples tropical fish tanks??

That is so true! I can't tell you how many times I've been adamant about going to some particular site while on a family vacation. Then when everyone asks why on EARTH I wanted to go walk through a swamp/hike rocky mountain trails in fall/walk three miles up a creekbed, the answer is always "because, this is the best place to find snakes here!".

After getting fed up with wedding planning and figuring out what to do for favors, I suggested to my fiance that we just tie pieces of ribbon around pinkie mice and give those out. The people who knew I kept snakes got to explain to the people who didn't just WHY I had enough dead mice around to actually go through with that.
Then I got to explain to everyone that it was a joke. (Though if someone were giving out free snake food as a favor, I would probably crash the wedding/party just for that).

Sounds you had little girls squeeling as they opened their favours, and little boys poking them with their cutlery? Then little boys chasing the girls holding a pinky by its tail? Sounds like my sort of wedding. :)

Yes...that had to be one of the most original weddings in history!

"What’s Wrong with My Snake?" by John and Roxanne Rossi is supposed to be a good book.
What's Wrong With My Snake - John Rossi, Roxanne Rossi - Google Books

C (http://books.google.com/books?id=wukkw-5cTHoC&printsec=frontcover&dq=What’s+Wrong+with+My+Snake?+by+John+and+Roxanne +Rossi&hl=en&ei=zdHiTtOTAcawiQLSiOGzBg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CDkQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=What’s Wrong with My Snake%3F by John and Roxanne Rossi&f=false)an't speak from personal experience, but I am going to try and pick it up in January.
