A friend of mine recently obtained several Oregon Red Spotted Garters or something like that and was asking if I was interested in taking one. I'm going to have a look at them today. They're young and small, maybe less than a foot long. I was wondering if it would be okay to keep my Puget (about 13 inches and 5 or 6 months old) together with this younger Oregon Red Spotted. I've read conflicting info that garters can live together but also that they will harass each other. And I know to quarantine if I go through, but I just want the opinion of others. They'd be living together in a 30 gallon habitat (about 36in X 12in).

Are they the same sex?

My friend isn't sure of any of the sexes. Is there a way to tell the difference from physical appearance?

Post pictures of the tails and we can tell you. iPod is acting up, cant give you the link, but search (on this forum) Sexing Pics.

Same sex, same relative size, and you should be fine. Is your Pugent CB (captive bred) or WC (wild caught) and is your friends CB or WC? You wouldn't want to put CB snakes with WC ones.. They'll pass on who knows what aside from parasites.

The species will be ok together.

If they are the same sex, cohabiting shouldn't be a problem after a good quarantine period. You can try this thread to see if you can tell the sex without popping.

Captive bred. And after checking, I'm pretty sure its a female (if Shelby gets pregnant my parents will slaughter me...).
I brought her home today and she's in a separate tank. I'll keep her there for quarantine.
I'll post pics in a bit and we'll see if it's for sure a female. If not, my friend has several others. ONE of them has to be female.
But like I said, these snakes are young, they can't be more than a couple months old.

Its always better to stay on the safe side if you're unsure.

You can sex baby garters right when they're born, unless they are small like a northwestern.

These are the best pics i got of the new snake. I'm pretty sure its female, but confirmation would be great.

EDIT: It's tail has a rapid taper when viewed from the side and i don't see the presence of male glands. I'm almost positive it's a girl

The taper isn't as rapid as you say, but it does look to be a girl... Or a boy with really small hemipenes.

Oh. Whoops.

They look female but this looks like it could e like my checkered - it LOOKS female but isn't.

Popping is easy once you get the hang of it but it CAN hurt them if done wrong so just be careful.

I'm a relatively tender being, I have a really big fear of breaking or hurting things. If she is female, what exactly will happen (if anything)?... Nothing i'd imagine

Popping CANNOT verify female. Nothing will happen, BUT it could be a tense male. If he pops, then it IS male obviously, but if nothin happens it's only PROBABLY a female.;)

Nothing will happen if it's a girl. You will definitely be able to tell if it's a boy though.

It's a girl! She was very willing to let me, i was really surprised.I feel a lot better knowing for sure now.
Now I just have to wait for the new girl to get some size on her. Don't want Shelby mistaking her for one of the worms I feed her.

Oh, and her name is Coby like "Cobra".

Don't forget the quarantine period. Be sure you look for odd behavior, proper stools, and mites.

Well, it APPEARS female, like i said. It could be a tense male that didn't pop. Hehe.

But yeah with those pics - it's a girl most likely.

Cool! I LOVE concinnus. (red spotted)

Considering what's being done to them I can see why they are TENSE.

My babies got really mad at me, and musked me. They got over it though, and now I know with which gender to refer to them. :)

My checkered hated me (well.. he did already) for days.
