Okay question for ya'll, For those of you in Canada that order pinkies online, where is the cheapest place to order them from im not fond of paying over $1 per pinkie. I have some stashed already but im going to need more. Thanks so much in advance.:)

Layne labs ships to Canada, not sure how much it would be though.

wasnt having much luck with that rodent breeders list. Lots looks like they are for pets not feeders. I emailed Layne labs for a shipping cost. Hoping it works out cheaper. Thanks, steve and kat for your replies.

I'm really thinking of breeding my own mice for the pinkies. It would be so much cheaper than paying a buck per pinky. My little ones eat 12 a week :(, all adds up. Not including the rat pinkies for my older group they can gobble up 4-8 a week @ 1.40 per

i considered that since i used to raise hamsters years ago but i think it would just be too hard on my two daughters, one is 10 yrs old and the other is 6 years old and like mom they love all animals. so they would be horrified if mom fed what they see as pets to the snake. It has taken me a couple years to make them understand that we dont keep all the pigs and cows as pets some have to be eaten. So at least for now, i think it best to slowely get them used to even seeing dead pinkies as snake food, that werent raised by us.. but yes at some point i will go to raising pinkies myself. Least then you know for sure where they can from and what went into making them and feeding the parents and conditions in which they are kept, and that they were killed humanly. i know alot of places say they are killed humanely but you can never really know for sure.

It seems to be the big issue with raising your own feeder mice is the kids, I think I seen that in the 'raising feeder mice, is it for you" thread. I don't have kids so it can work for me

I tried getting a quote from grayhound and it came to like $115, I was like no way. So I emailed the guy. Hopefully he will get back to me in a pleasing way, not like one company here in my province, it was like he didn't want to sell his feeders to me.

I like this guys prices though. 100 for $35. I would be paying $110.88 at the petshop at the corner of my street

That's some expensive pinkies, with 1CAD = 0.61GBP. We have on shop locally that sells at 45p/pinky, which I thought was a bit steep, but bearable. We have another shop locally that sells 10 for 2.50GBP. We could get them cheaper online, but its marginal when you factor in postage and far more convenient to collect them locally.
I cant imagine being able to raise mg own snake food as Char used to keep them as pets and wont even watch the pinky feeds.

I saw that guys site and greyhound and air being the only two choices hmm could be very expensive indeed. Whats wrong with guaranteed next day am.. lol.. faster then greyhound. Im thinking im stuck paying $1.21 plus tax at petsmart or $1.25 plus tax at a reptile store in town. im kinda of leaning towards the reptile store cause each pinkie is individually sealed/vaccume packed and at petsmart its 4 packs. I sure wish we had the breeds of garters and ease of getting pinkies up here in the northland like they do stateside.

I can relate chris, my kids would disown me if i raised pinkie mice just to feed to the snakes. After we had our first pig slaughtered, they refused to eat pork for like 6 months. I have a feeling they wont be watching the pinkie butchering..lol... good thing to do when they are at school during the day. That is if i ever see the babies again lol i set them down and off they went, all gone...

They do like smaller hides, they like to be touching the walls, but that doesn't matter so much especially if there are two snakes so they can snuggle.:D

3055I ordered one of these for their hide. It measures 8.5x5.1x3.5. It comes with mossy stuff even. And a coconut hide, and a hay hide to see which they preferred.

Yeah that's fine. Like I said they have each other which replaces the need to go up against the walls.

i guess lifting up the hide every 5 mins to make sure they are okay is out of the question, huh? just kidding lol now the next waiting phaze begins lol

They'll get comfortable and start coming out. My snakes always have their heads stickin out watching. Heck, Rooster doesn't even use hides!

Easy fix

Push some substrate into the hide so it creates a smaller hide

Whats wrong with guaranteed next day am.

I think you can probably choose next day am. He has a section underneath the Air Canada and Greyhound ones that says "Canada Post and major couriers such as UPS, DHL and Purolator can be used as well."

dieselbaby
10-06-2011, 11:46 AM
yeah thats a good idea, the new hide come with moss, i can just pick up some extra. I wont bother them today though, as much as im fighting the urge to lift the hide and peak..lol.. i will refrain from such childish behaviors..lol...

Oh okay i didnt see that part... i guess i should have read more lol.. Im thinking even with a reasonable shipping amount is going to be over a dollar, but i will definately email him for a quote then. doesnt hurt to ask.

give them a day to settle in.

a light spray down with a water bottle would help them come out and explore a little.

I found another possible source for pinkies. Prices aren't THAT much cheaper though.
According to the website, it would be $45 for 100 + $35-$50 shipping. So 100 pinkies should cost $80-$95.
