I am able to get a bunch of grape vine but first I would like to know if it is ok to have it in with my garters. I know pine is bad and I wouldnt put that in anyway but when I was helping tear it all down I was thinking it would look cool in the tanks and how much fun they would have climbing all over the vines. I need to know if its ok. ok.

Don't see a problem with it. Don't go by me though.

Not sure how the vine would react to being heated but you should to kill any nasties that are living on it.

Yeah I guess, but it would have..... other life. You'd need to bake it.

Sorr i was responding to Jesse. Also I was on my phone and typing quick is the reason behind the extra letters sometimes. I was talking about getting the vines from my mom cause they are at her house and dad works in the town Im at thats why I mentioned him bringing them to town. Sorry for confusing you. I just need to know the temop and how long I need to put the grape vines in the oven for to kill the bad things. Thank you and sorry for the confusion again.

I put small logs in at 220° for 30 minutes.
You might be able to use less time since they are much thinner.

so would you say the same temp but for 15-20 mins? Thank you Steve.

That will probably do.
Your project has given me some ideas for my neighbors grape vines.
My nice long runs across my big enclosures might give my girls a more vertical environment.

Or you could go to Michaels.:p

Kidding, I'd love to do this, I just need bigger cages.

Im glad I can help. Lol I am going to do this in the small tanks right now and then do the same in the big tank once I get that put up and fixed. I still havent been able to get that done yet because money is low. I hate that when ur living from pay check to pay check. My snakes all have there food and stuff and Im glad that they are still small so that the tank they are in is still ok.
Thank you all for your help and I will be sure to take pics when I get the vines in. I cant waitnd Im glad that they are still small so that the tank they are in is still ok.

That sounds like a really good idea! I'd love to see pictures once you get their tanks decorated :) Mine love climbing, but I always question how smart it is to give them access to the roof of the cage...

btw, I've done research with vitis grape vines, and I don't think there's any sort of reactive chemical in them, so they should be safe for the snakes and okay to heat ;)

One step that I always forget, but seems like an excellent idea, is to wrap the branches in aluminum foil before putting in the oven. It should allow them to get hot with less risk of catching on fire. I usually do 250 degrees for about half an hour.

Thank you for the suggestion. I will do that. My only thing now is trying to get the vines in there without breaking them while doing it.

the branches i have in mine, i i boiled them, and then put them in the oven to dry them out again, double whammy. It was interesting doing the big ones though, thank goodness for my huge soup pot.

why did you boil them.

Because that can also help kill all the bugs.

Thank nyou for answering. I thought that was it but I was making sure. Now heres another question.... When they are put in the oven Im assuming when they come out they will be harder to bend and shape. If that is true or even if not then is there a safe way to form them and then cook them so they stay in the position u put them in there in. Cause ten I could shape them to different designs and then use them.

yeah i boiled them to kill anything in them without cracking the wood in the oven poplar wood becomes brittle when dried especially if its dried too quickly, which is why i boiled first so they also soaked up some water, then baked to dry them out some so they wouldnt mold in the tank later. I would think if you boiled then baked you could form them while wet and pin them maybe so they keep that shape as they dry, woodworkers shape wood with steam and brace til it dries and it holds the shape so i would think vines can be done that way as well.

What would I use to hold them in the shape.

do you have mechanics wire/haywire/14 gauge electric fence wire? something that wont burn up while you bake it. steel clamps etc

If you're not looking to do something too intricate, maybe you can stuff it into a cake pan in the shape that you want it.
