It has been bugging me for so long, I see 4 different patterned garters. But some in a certain area I find more than the others
From left to right we'll call them A, B and C

A and C - 80 out of 100 times I'll see this snake while B the rest of those times
D - use serpent for example, I only find maybe once a year

The red sided is obvious, but what about the other 3?
I don't want to be confused any longer

I'm not really good at identifying, but I've seen quite a few easterns with similar patterns to C.

To me they all look like,
A. Eastern
B. Red sided
C. Eastern
D. Radix
Nothing crazy. But what do I know.
D looks like a radix!
I made it sound like it only LOOKED like a radix. Not what I meant.
D is an awesome radix.

A,B & C are all sirts, d is a radix. That's the Manitoba hypervariability in full cry.

A b and c arelikely all parietalis. They don't need to have red on them to be considered parietalis!

That is all in this area though, from Stephenfield Lake to St. Lupicin

Not everywhere is the same for Manitoba
I've been noticing that snakes like A show up in this area while snakes like C show up in other places.
Snakes like D just don't show up often for me even though they are the most beautiful one, super color combination

Well D is another species. Radix... The others are all parietalis I'm thinkin'...
I see what you mean though...

Yes D without question is thamnophis radix. But seeing a high degree of variation in the same locality is very common... the easterns in my backyard are all a little different! A B and C are probably all parietalis but they could be s. sirtalis or even intergrades of the two! I like A, with the white flecks!

A is what I always called Eastern Plains

No such thing, cause 1., that's not a plains of any kind, ad 2., there's no such thing as an eastern plains.;)

I heard that easterns might not be in manitoba. People only think they might be found in the southeast of manitoba or right on the border of ontario. Next year I'm going to travel to find out.
This little one was found at Learys, MB

Yeah this guys a parietalis.;) Just not a very red one.
Kantar

he has no red at all, he is my little 'White-Sided' :)

He's cute.:)
The white is why I thought it could be an eastern possibly, but I think it's not... Just like I don't think A B or C is, I think it's allll parietalis, and D is radix.;)
