Hi all, I'm pretty sure the garter in my back yard is northwestern, but anyway, how can I catch it? Currently, it lives under a hole that is beneath the cement block under the air-conditioning fan. I saw it a few years ago and didn't worry as it was a baby, but know it is at least 2-3 feet, and my sister (6 years old) is skittish of large snakes. Any ideas on how I can catch it? I of course don't want to kill it, I just want to relocate it as that crevice also contains large spiders and I want to close it up. Any ideas

Lay a board down or give it another place to hide.
Something you have access to.;)

Northwesterns don't get over 2 feet. Even getting close to two feet is kind of rare.

I didn't realize that they don't get over two feet.
Also, I meant how can I get it out of the crevice?

Maybe you can try to lure it out with some food. Like fish or worm.

You probably can't without possibly injuring/hurting it.
It's found a good home will use it for protection.
You'll just have to wait for it to come out.
Offering it a different place to be is still an option.
If your nights are getting cool/cold you could put a heating pad in a box/container and see if it will used it for a hide.;)

Yup I've done that. There's a bunch of rat snakes living under our house (or used to:() and I tossed a peice of plywood there, and that week there he was.
I have tons of boards at the creek I herp at. On the rare occasion I find something, it's under one.

Thanks for the advice guys. When by board do you mean a flat piece of rock, wood or other material?

It was one of the first SUV's :) It was GMC's version of a Chevy Blazer or Bronco I think. We had one when I was a teenager. Loved that thing! Could take the top off and cram a whole bunch of people in it

The problem is, his "board", which is a 4' by 4' by 3'' cement block , is his favorite hiding spot, as there are plenty of other flat rocks and dark areas to hide under. Ive only seen him twice in the past four years, so I doubt he'd move. Should I get up early to get him when he's basking?

He'll move around. I had a big beautiful black racer living under our shed. He lived there, I'd see him fo under it all the time, but occasionally I'd find him under the dog house right next to the shed!
