I have lived here in same house for 4 years and I have searched for garters lots of times. We live right where our backyard is attached to a huge lake and is green and nice and on the other side of the house it is kind of desert. I have never even caught a glimpse of a wild snake. Sadly today I found one, ran over in front of my house :( What kind of garter was this poor girl?? I think she looks like my Eastern, but we are in Washington. She was big too. Poor thing :(

Looks like a wandering garter to me.

I agree, Wandering seems like the best bet, it's too big (looking, at least) to be a NW, doesn't look anything like a puget or fitchii.

I'm thinking Wandering(T.elegans vagrans) Male
Thamnophis elegans vagrans - Wandering Gartersnake (http://www.californiaherps.com/snakes/pages/t.e.vagrans.html)

Oh.. they are in WA... yeah, wandering it is then.
That sucks though, that that's the only snake you've seen.:(

thats sad. Hubby sent me a pic of an eastern today that had gotten ran over also. The one he saw was about 2 ft . So so sad when this happens to snakes.

It's likely not a NW, Kat. That snake looks way too big to be a NW, even if it were old.
How big was it, do you know? I have found a wandering garter before, feisty little thing!

Just the markings reminded me of some of the babies.

It was probably 32-34 inches.

I have questions now, but I'll start my own thread for that. Back to the poor squished wandering.
