Some garters look to you for food, some garters look at you as food

Post pictures of your battle wounds :D

Nice battle wound.
I think given the size of our Binky's mouth at the moment, if she tried to bite me I'd have to give her 10 out 10 for guts and effort. Yesterday I'm sure she was tolerating my fingers in her tank because she was trying to work out if they were food.

I think snakes can tell the difference right away if they are being offered food or putting your hand near. I just think they bite out of excitement

Chris I have a new checkered that's around the age of yours, he bites me everyday, and draws blood!

Alright. Battle wounds... I don't really take pics of every wound, so I can't post them all. In fact, only two that I can think of have been recorded.

Northern water snake. Meanest wild snake I've ever caught. YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. (http://m.youtube.com/#/profile?user=thamnophisman&v=xZKv4FONy1Q&view=videos)

Yes!!! It was really bad!!

Yeah, I know. The post was for the water snake, but I had to include him!:D besides, that's the only other picture of a wound I have! (but I've had a looooot more... Wish I had taken pics of the racer bite!)

But I'll say this. And believe it!!

The little checkered bite hurt more than the water snake!!!!!! It was on FIRE!!!!!!!

I have that one of when snap bit my lip. That's the only one I've ever taken a picture of. Hades did it too. Very small mark, but was dripping blood for quite some time.

I laughed it off, same with Hades. They don't like me, and I find their lashing out funny sometimes. Snap whips her head with her tail when I pick her up.

Yeah, it's funny with my checkered... but nothing more.:D

Actually, his first bite hurt more than the water snake!!! On FIRE!!! (yeah I already posted that. Hush hush)

Wow, nice 'battle scars' :) Seems like whenever my snakes bite me they realize immediately that it's an accident and like slooooowwwwwly just let go. They've never even broke the skin.

None of my snakes ever bit me. I'm just lucky I guess. Still, I prefer to move Izy in gloves, just in case. She's jumpy and I still didn't use to it. :)

I think snakes can tell the difference right away if they are being offered food or putting your hand near.

Sure, they know the difference if you're just placing your hand near them FIRST. As in, it's not feeding time. They come rushing out, check out the hand, realize there's no food and get bored and leave.

But if you feed them first, and they're all worked up into feeding mode, forget it. They'll bite anything, including your hand.

hmm Can't say I've ever been bitten and had blood drawn. I've caught quite a few snakes so far, mind you I was only bitten once when I was 7years old n caught a little baby garter, and being young I taunted it with my pinkie finger... low and behold just what it latched on to lol :)

You will eventually come across one that draws blood.
I wish you luck in this quest.:D

I've only just seen this thread. My Eastern Melanistic female has bitten me twice now and both times she never wants to let go. The last time she tagged me was last week and after I finally got her off my hand she tagged my girlfriends arm. I find it funny how once you stop bleeding the bite looks pitiful :D

@ kibakikba: Ouch .. in your lip ...... what that a garterbite?

I'm lukcy so far ... never have been bitten by any snake.
A friend of mine had one that would bite if you take her out, so I didn't pick her up *lol*

Yeah, my concinnus who is quite frightened of me did it. She kept getting substrate literally glued to the front of her mouth, and it worried me, so naturally, I held her up to my face and she didn't like it one bit.

Neither have I but this little one was freaking out over me picking it up.

Only about 7 inches long tops, chewed on the skin between my thumb and pointer finger for a little while.

You don't fool us Steve. But your secret is safe here.

Btw, how long do they tend to bite for before they decide they can't swallow your fingers? It must vary, but I get the impression that they chow down for a while.

This one let go after a couple of minutes. Some chew and some just hang-on.

I've had snakes just nip me, (like the water snake I posted) and others, like black racers (ouch) and my checkered hang on for quite some time... racers chew like heck.

if they're hanging on for a long time you can put a drop of vinigar on your hand so it drips into the snakes mouth, that usually gets them to let go.

Could you use apple cider vinegar? I have lots of pipettes just not regular white vinegar... might help when Hades is thinking he's tough and won't let go for anything.

kibakiba
09-27-2011, 05:30 PM
True. I do like his attitude, if he ended up being a sweetheart it would ruin the whole Hades name. But, I can't handle being envenomed when he does bite. I can handle dry bites, but sometimes he really sinks his teeth in and then my hand swells up really big and goes numbish with the feeling of needles all over it.

RedSidedSPR
09-27-2011, 05:36 PM
Yeah, I hear ya. Attitude is awesome.

I like my checkereds attitude, and I don't force him to not bite me. I just let him, but at the same time I don't like getting poop flung eberywhere each time, and then having to wash my hands. So I wouldn't mind if he stopped, at least a little bit... But I also dont mind it, he's the only one with attitude, so o can't force either...

Whatever.
