I couldnt resist. Went to the reptile show looking for pinkies, they didn't have any, ended up having to just get a checkered garter snake.:(

HE'S AWESOME!!

Pictures later, he bit me 3 times.

Baby of course, living with my others. I'll measure him, but probable 7 inches. Jumpy at the moment, bit me 3 times, I'm gonna see if he'll eat when I feed the others.

Sure you get another checkered, but my little NW still need a home.... :( ;)

Bit you? No way! I wonder if it's WC. My two albinos are as tame as can be.

Steve has a point. Be careful. Captive snakes from these shows can and often do introduce some nasty diseases/mites, etc. that I don't even see in WC snakes.

It's not... but holy crap he's mean.

I edited. No way I'd put a snake from a show in with my others. Strict quarantine, in a separate room, and no cross- contamination. Check for mites!

09-03-2011, 02:23 PM
CRAP. i didn't even think of that.

I'm almost positive he's CB... he's been eating guppies and pinky parts, nothing else.

RedSidedSPR
09-03-2011, 02:34 PM
Here's their (foo-foo) website.. they had a lot of snakes OBVIOUSLY captive bred...

I didn't even think of the concern. It was a CB snake, one of the only garters at the show, and i got it.

He ate tilapia, nightcrawler, and silversides without a problem.

Crazy little thing...

They won't let me post the good one, says 402 FORBIDDEN, which is weird since it's just an upload from Imageshack.

Now i'm really worried... I can quarantine, but I'd have to do it in a big tub.

Man, i don't get it, but i can't upload the good photo... Imageshack won't let me.

EDIT: Oh come on, it's been "removed" from my account.. what, is it too graphic?:p

Someone look at this and tell me if they know them to be reputable. ~Available~ - SINISTER SERPENTS (http://sinisterserpents.weebly.com/available.html)

ConcinusMan

Imageshack does that once in a while. It's usually because their servers are overloaded or there was an error with the upload. Try again.

EDIT: I just checked my imageshack. A lot of my photos are doing that. A server or three might be down, under maintenance, out of bandwidth, disk arrays being defragmented, etc. They'll get it straightened out eventually.

Say what... i really have to?

No you don't but you put all your other snakes at risk if you don't.
You might get lucky and nothing happens. I hope that's the case.
A strict quarantine period protect both the new and old snakes.
It's well worth the time since the introduction of some diseases can kill an entire group or collection.
It's something you have to implement and enforce.;)

ConcinusMan
09-03-2011, 03:38 PM
Yeah, shows can be a real cesspool of disease. I would heed Steve's advice. Use a separate room even.

It will probably be OK, and it's not too late to quarantine now, but if you don't do it and it's not OK, the consequences can be disastrous. One snake with "crypto" or whatever it's called (a virus I think) and it's all over with.

RedSidedSPR
09-03-2011, 03:43 PM
Crap. I can't do another room. I don't have another cage... I cab use a big tub.. What do I look for?

Can you look at that link and see if he's known to you, or at all reputable?

Starling96
09-03-2011, 03:46 PM
on the tub make SURE its escape proof like when i had to use a tub i cut a hole in the top of the lid and got some old window nylon and placed 2x4's around the edges with weights
Sounds extreme and call me crazy but thats what i had to do :D

guidofatherof5

reputable?

Never make a decision about quarantine based on who you bought the snake from.
A quarantine policy should be blind to that.
My policy is simple. All new snakes are quarantined, period.
No offense to the breeders they came from. I'm sure the breeders have an equally tough quarantine period. They have much to lose if they don't.

True. Didn't mean to imply if that is how it was taken. Even a reputable dealer can be unaware of a disease running rampant through his collection until it's too late.;)

You meant you guys quarantine snakes from anyone, like Scott or Don?

I have no way really to do it. I will though, I guess...

I'd still like to know about this breeder and if he's reputable. I will still do it, but I would like to know.

I do. It's no offense to them just a policy to protect my snakes.
I hope the people that get snakes from me quarantine them. It's just good policy.
I would take no offense to it.

No, I get it.. I commend you for that.:D I've never done it for these 3.. didn't even cross my mind, being CB from Scott and Don...

I just don't have another cage.. I've already put him in (dang it--I feel stupid) and I can't figure out how I'd do this. If I thought there'd be such a concern I wouldn't have bought him.:(

guidofatherof5
09-03-2011, 05:01 PM
A good quarantine policy is something you will have to set-up.
Your snakes will probably be OK this time but you can't run the risk anymore.
I by no means am telling you what to do but I do know that you care about your snakes and only want the best for them.

RedSidedSPR
09-03-2011, 05:03 PM
I do. I would rather have you physically force me to do this stuff than not say it. I just had no idea, or I would either have it set up, or not bought him.

Is it too late? I mean, he's been in there...

ConcinusMan
09-03-2011, 05:13 PM
Definitely not too late. It's your call though. You could just leave things the way they are and probably nothing will happen, but on the slim chance that it does, and your snakes all get wiped out, the responsibility for that is yours and yours alone.

RedSidedSPR
09-03-2011, 05:18 PM
I understand. I want to do it, but I'd have to have another tank... argh.

But wouldn't anything he "has" have done it's thing?

Would i have to start tonight???

d_virginiana
09-03-2011, 05:34 PM
I'd go ahead and quarantine him if I were you... A cheap critter keeper even would work since he's a baby. They're usually under ten bucks complete with a snapped-on, baby-proof lid :)

I was talking to the guy at the fish and reptile store I mentioned in an earlier post about going to the Raleigh expo. Apparently he gets a lot of charity cases after that particular show where people unknowingly get sick snakes or non-eaters and bring them to him for help. Not trying to scare you here, since he was mainly talking about python vendors as that's what he's into. Still, better to be safe than sorry IMO; it probably won't hurt to wait till tomorrow if it's too late to go out and find something tonight.

On a happier note though, that is such a cute snake! You're so lucky you could pick something up from the show!

RedSidedSPR
09-03-2011, 05:38 PM
What do I look for? How would I know if anythings wrong anyway?

Yeah, I was glad to find him.

Mommy2many
09-03-2011, 05:39 PM
You could even pick up a small 10 gallon tank for about $10.00. Even Steve highly recommended quarantining the snakes I got from him from my group until we were sure. They are actually still in their own enclosure. You just never know.

RedSidedSPR
09-03-2011, 05:40 PM
The only place I could get a 10gal without searching for kne for weeks, is PetsMart its like $30.

guidofatherof5
09-03-2011, 05:43 PM
A shoe box container for a day or so is no big deal.
Many diseases and parasites are associated with feces.
Removing him now would be good. I would also change the enclosure he was in just to be safe.

Mommy2many
09-03-2011, 05:43 PM
That sucks. Then the plastic tub is your next best bet. Just remember the holes can't be too big.

Mommy2many
09-03-2011, 05:44 PM
How about a plastic chinese food container, if only for the night? That's what they get shipped in many times.

I have enough things to put him overnight.

Mommy2many
09-03-2011, 05:49 PM
Good to hear. Don't beat yourself up for not knowing ahead of time. We all have to learn things sometime. I didn't realize that I really should quarantine Steve's snakes until he really insisted upon it when we talked about it. That was this past spring:rolleyes:

RedSidedSPR
09-03-2011, 05:52 PM
I've never done it, and its been fine, and I just forgot about it... I truly wouldnt have gotten the snake if I had known, it's too hard for me to do it.

d_virginiana
09-03-2011, 05:58 PM
Just think of how happy he'll be in with all your others after the quarantine :)

I wouldn't have thought about it either if I hadn't talked to the herp-shop guy. It's weird too, since I'm so OCD about quarantine and cross-contamination with new fish or frogs.

RedSidedSPR

But he looks so healthy..... and cute.:D

ConcinusMan
09-03-2011, 06:49 PM
And probably is healthy and nothing will ever come of it. It's really up to you Jesse. I've taken a chance although it is a slim chance, before with CB snakes and nothing ever happened. It's your call. Nobody elses.;)

If it was a gamble, and it is, I would lay 50 to 1 odds that the snake won't introduce disease or any other problems.

You just have to be willing to take that loss if you were to lose that gamble.

I fully understand that it's my choice. Like I've said before, I ask for all the suggestions I can get, all the help, that doesn't mean I'm gonna listen to them. unless it's something like "don't feed this, it's dangerous". I want all the help I can get with this guy.. And because of it, I'm probably gonna quarantine him.
