Its still a melanistic.... but it's not as melanin-covered as the others! That's wicked. Like the hyPermelanistic wandering!! I'm calling you in about.... 5 minutes

I agree with Shannon. I don't think this is a new morph at all. Just a different looking melanistic.

And I think a lot of snakes called "anery" are really a form of melanistic so there you go.

Joe
Is it a male? If it is we should try to breed it to my het anery next year and see what happens.

It's a tiny little baby. I talked to Joe tonight. I know Joe does not have the patience to type a lot so I will do it for him. It came out of a wild female that also produced more regular looking melanistics. The mother of the snake is owned by Bill Minnick. Bill sent Joe a group of babies from a melanistic or het female (idk which it is) and this one was just kinda in there. The snake IS a melanistic, according to Joe. It just has a lot less black filled in than any other he's seen. According to him it is IDENTICAL to the anery red sideds. In fact when he found it on his floor (it had escaped briefly from his bin) he thought he was picking up a baby anery red sided. But it is definitely an eastern. It could be something new that just kinda popped up, he's going to hold onto it. And if he ever decides to part with it I called DIBS!!! :P Haha! But seriously It's really no different than when you see the "other" strain of melanistic wanderings, the ones many call 'hypermelanistic" (but all melanistics are hypermels, that's what melanistic is short for!) the ones that still have a lot of pattern. For a snake to be melanistic the only requirement is an increased amount of black pigmentation. Whether or not it has a pattern is irrelevant.... so yes for now we would say this snake is a melanistic, but for some reason he's a bit different looking from the ones we are used to seeing. It could be a totally new gene that is responsible for the increased black pigmentation... or it could be just a freak! Kinda the opposite of the melanistics we get regularly that have those gray spots and lines on their necks. Like that, but to a much greater extent.

The fact that it was found with siblings that are classic melanistic would lead me to believe that it is probably not a new morph, but maybe just a unique individual twist on the morph that may not be inheritable. If it were the lone aberrant snake in the group, I would be more inclined to think of it as a potentially "new" morph.
Of course, there is a chance that it could be melanistic and something else (possibly "new") combined, I guess.

If you had found this snake you would be going nuts and wondering why everyone wasn't offering you money for it and how the hobby needs to preserve this gene. Is it really that hard to give credit where credit is due?
Cool snake Joe, thanks for sharing.
