you can keep 4 garters in the same cage, if they're approximately the same size, and the cage is large enough
I would separate the male, so you don't end up with offspring

They could stay together for about 2 years if they are all babies

If the cage around 40gals +, yes.
All should he the same size, and all should be the same sex.
Unless you want babies (cause they will breed) and that case they have to all be the same kind of garter,

First of all WELCOME TO THE FORUM.Ya what size is your tank?I agree with Red. At one point when I owned about 9 garters and they were all in a 90 gallon together. Then 2 had babies at the same time. So I ended up with about 150 babies and I had to release all of them that day. On some land my uncle owned. What kinds of garters do you have / could we see some pics please.

Gallons are irrelevant. Floor area is what matters. There's no set rule for the number of snakes you can keep in one enclosure. That's just something you learn to know. You'll know if there's too many.
I can keep 4-8 snakes in a 55 gallon. Depends on the size of the snakes, and more importantly, the social dynamics and number of basking and hiding places. Some snakes just don't get along well and stress out, but another group of different snakes may get along just fine.
Right now, I have no problem keeping (fairly big babies) 3 snow radixes, two albino checkereds, an Iowa albino, and olivia, all in one 10 gallon tank. This of course, would be too little space in about a year.

Yeah, you sort of have to go out of your way to find a 40 gal that doesn't have the standard floor space. I think that bowfront 40gals are pretty common, but they're specifically for fish and cost an arm and a leg..

A 40 breeder is 36 X 18
A 40 long is 48 X 12 (same floor space as a 55 gallon long, only its not as tall)

You need to upload the file to an image sharing site such as image shack or photobucket and use the forum codes provided. You can't upload a picture from your computer using

I know, I was thinking more in terms the design of a lot of aquariums and some types of tall tanks. Like, I was assuming that if anyone went out and bought a 40 gal for four snakes it would either be a breeder or a long, either of which are enough room for four babies.

Well sure they're big enough. I was only pointing out that they are both 40 gallons but the floor space is different. And being how floor space is really what matters for garters, telling people what the gallons are doesn't say anything about how much space the snakes have.
