I've noticed a lot of people have threads dedicated to their snakes so they don't have to keep making new threads every time one of them does something interesting, so I figured I'd go ahead and do it too.
First off, there's Houdini. He's my first snake, and he's been with me for 11 years. I got him for free when he escaped from his tank in the petstore and I caught him. He's my buddy, and I can't wait till I can have him and Harley in the same tank.

Then there's Harley. I got her this summer; she was born mid-May, so now she's a little under four months old. She's the main reason I'm starting this thread. With her growing and coloring up I'm constantly wanting to post random things about her.
This is two days after we got her

And this is her now; she refuses to hold still, so I can't tell exactly, but I'd guess maybe 8 or 9 inches long.

It should be a fun thread for all of us.

Thanks, I passed the compliments along to the snakes, but they ignored me and started begging for more food.
Something sort of interesting did happen with Houdini yesterday. My mom was holding him, and I decided to get Harley out and let them do a supervised meet'n'greet. Houdini immediately recognized that the other snake was nearby, but where she's still so small and he can't really see, he couldn't really home in on her, meanwhile she's aware of everything going on and just chilling out in my hand. Finally, Houdini decided that my arm was the other snake, and started trying to interact with it. It was kind of funny to watch.

It's her worm cutting tool.:p
that's funny, yesterday I held my adult with one of my babies for the first time too!:D
Adult was like "what is that crawling on me?!"
Baby was like "this is the biggest garter snake I've ever seen!!!!"

I always break the index finger nails, it's probably better though... The snakes like to nibble on those fingers... Haha.

Hey Lora i can see the family resemblance in Harley.:D
I'd say 8-9 inches is accurate... that's how big mine is. if it helps, try this for measurements. (http://www.serpwidgets.com/Apps/measure.html)
It works great, you dont' need a good camera, and they don't need to hold perfectly still, (you can put something over them and when you lift it he'll be there curled up).
just take an overhead photo of the snake with a item of known size, like a ruler.

Huh, that's a really neat program. I'll have to try that with both of them.
Good thing it works with crappy cameras and fidgety snakes!

It's not anymore, it got chewed off during the GRE a day or two ago :D

Harley is officially a genius: After handling her today, I put her back into her tank, and she ended up in her water dish. The dish is a clear cup like they use for shipping snakes and stuff in. For the next ten minutes she proceeded to swim like a crazy thing trying to escape, nose-bumping the sides and everything. Then, she realized that her dish is all of 1.5 inches deep and crawled out the top.
So intelligent, so proud. :p

Great news: My mom said that Houdini has started taking food from her without complaining now (if you displease him, he complains by tail-whipping you) and is continuing to eat well. That has really put my mind at ease since he's so easily startled and she hasn't dealt with him much since his vision started to go. Good to be able not to worry about that anymore!

I was thinking something along the lines of enhancing the "bird" I knew one girl on the streets that had one pinky nail kept long and polished and I don't want to say what she used it for, but I'll just say it was the 80's and a lot of people were using a certain illegal substance.
