View Full Version : Tiny miracle

This morning I woke up to a rather unpleasant surprise. I know I mentioned earlier that I suspected my albino checkered female was gravid. Well it turns out she was, but she dropped her babies way too early. The babies were almost done but they had not absorbed their yolks yet. Some of them were barely alive but most were dead and the rest were on their way out... Very sad... then as I was picking up all the stillborns out of the corner of my eyes I saw one that was not dead or dying. I picked the little guy up, somehow this tiny, premature baby garter snake was able to free itself from the sac and had managed to survive. This little snake is so small, the size of a newborn dekay's! But it seems to be alert and active! A bit thin, I don't think he absorbed the yolk, but he was apparently far enough along to where he managed to make it. I put him in a deli with wet paper towel as he was dry and needed to shed, when I get home from work tonight, we shall see how this little survivor is doing. it seems maybe this one was born to fight, so hopefully he will start eating quickly so that he doesn't starve! I'll post a picture tonight after work!

Its name should be 'Lucky' I hope all the best for the little one, its in good hands
at least you can offer bigger pieces than I had to with my northern redbellies, started off with pieces no wider than 1/16 of an inch bites. Now they are biting down 1/8ths no problem
Can try to leave little bites sittng all around the enclosure. Their first bites was from a tiny piece of worm that I managed to stick to the enclosure wall

I was truly amazed to find a live baby from all of this. It baffles me that somehow this one beat the odds so far... I just hope it's not all in vain and that he makes it! If he does I will probably put him up for adoption once I am sure he is OK!

I could always measure him when I get home! He actually "inflated" while I was at work yesterday. I kept him in a wet deli cup yesterday... I came home to a much plumper baby, before the photo he was a lot thinner and he looked awful! His belly scales to me looked as if they had not all joined in the middle yet... Like a crease, like the belly button but much longer! I'll see if I can get a picture of that...

I can measure him for you, if he's sitting on a flat surface, with an overhead shot, with something next to him of known size. (computer program unless you have it)
Or not.:D

My baby Fl. albinos belly scales are like that but he is eating and doing great. He is around a month old now.

I currently have a pretty tiny male albino checkered. He didn't eat for the entire first month i had him. Thought he was goner for sure. Then one day, he started eating like a champ and hasn't quit since, and sheds every 3 weeks. Oh yeah, he's going to be fine.

any updates? how is the little one?
aSnakeLovinBabe
09-27-2011, 04:21 PM
Unfortunately this little guy refused food his entire life. Nothing I could do would convince him to eat. I suspect it is partially due to not having absorbed a yolk sac (when I found him he was far too thin in the middle to have absorbed one)

yea, me too, but.... being a realist, I knew what to expect and I didn't have the highest expectations for this one.

Thanks guys, I really tried hard to get him to eat but he had entirely no interest in hunting for any kind of food. He kinda had that blank stare all the time, never really seemed to "notice" things and would crawl right past my tongs or the flopping guppy.
