That's because abbreviations like those don't have a place in civilised, grown-up conversation. They're just another way to circumvent the forum's profanity filters.

Agreed, hence they shouldn't be used on forum.

Means "Rolling On the Floor Laughing, But Somehow Still Typing". I stole it from one of our British comedians because I thought it was a good observation on most chat room/text talk abbreviations.
I don't want to come over as some old git with a downer on the youth of today (I am, but that's not the point in hand :) ), however surely we want to keep the forum as a fun, but grown-up, place to converse - as opposed to lowering it to text-talk, abbbreviations and teenage profanity? The youngsters who stop by the forum can make positive contributions but let's not kid ourselves, the wealth of knowledge is held in the heads of the older members and if we dumb down the conversations we will loose more valued contributers (I could name at least one person who made positive contributions who isn't posting anymore).
Just my two-pennies worth, which is not to thinly veiled as being targetted at Jesse in particular.

Well said Chris. I think it is important to keep profanity at a minimum, and to try to be as respectful of others on this forum as we can. We need to try to be friendly and supportive of one another and hold our behavior up to the same standards as we would if we were interacting in person...try to keep negativity and fighting to a minimum as well. This forum has come to be very important to me...as a place to connect with people with a shared passion for garters and as a place that I now have many friends and a social connection that I do not have in the real world. I think many people on the forum for whatever reason, busy lives, family responsibilities, depression...what have you, find connections on here that they are unable to have out in the real world. It saddens me that good members have decided to leave the forum because of problems they may have encountered here. We need to make sure that does not happen anymore.
This is certainly not directed at anyone in particular...I speak to everyone here and include myself in this. And if this makes me sound like an old fuddy duddy, than so be it...

Intrepid, in many languages it means fearless.
Coincidentally, that's what I tried to name my first garter back in 2005. Couldn't get used to calling it anything, though.

Not quite sure what's up with the black bars but at least this time we can view it all the way up to 1080 HD. Looks fantastic on an HD 16:9 monitor at full screen. Stunning!
There's still something going on in Movie Maker that's causing it to not be at full frame size. I assume it comes out letterboxed before you upload to youtube? If I was more familar with that program...
Well, believe me, there's a setting there somewhere causing the black bars. Just need to find it. It's called "letterbox". Find the settings. the video is the right dimensions to fill the entire frame but it keeps getting letterboxed for some reason.

Thanks and yeah still kicking myself for the non-HD that was like the first time I ever used movie maker and didn't know to export it in HD might re-upload that one.
No, it isn't like that before upload But thanks had no idea what it'd be called that helps. Like, a lot. xD

I would think it's viewable on mobile only at the lower resolutions.
Are you sure you are not creating a letterboxed 4:3 aspect ratio WMV and uploading that? I think you are. Always use 16:9 when creating your WMV. Read this:

Yeah I know. There's a few minor upgrades from my model. Mine only does 720p HD for one thing, (yours does 1080 as well) which to me is more than adequate anyway. I don't plan on playing the videos on a massive 1080p television so 720 is enough. And, you can get a little closer in macro mode. All of the coolpix models do take awesome photos though! All of them.

Never mentioned it but I moved out 2 of the no-longer-called-babies babies out of their cage and into my solitary male as they are now big enough. They're all loving it, its cool seeing him interact with other snakes instead of just looking bore all day.

He was the only one I didn't pop,
Which is why I don't do it. It can only confirm what I suspected already; that the snake is male. But it's not reliable at doing so at all. Many of them won't pop. Doesn't mean they're female so the practice isn't very useful to me. Now, if males AND females both popped reliably but had different parts, I'd do it. But that's not the case. If you ask me, it's no more reliable than sexing them visually, which I'm pretty good at. Good enough that I'll get about the same accuracy rate as trying to pop them.
This year I'm not even bothering. I'm not sexing baby snakes. I'm selling them as unsexed. Now, those of you that want specific sexes, I'll do my best to sex them visually but I won't back it up or guarantee it. Still, I'm pretty good at it and accuracy rate is around 85 percent or better.
RedSidedSPR
09-21-2012, 10:35 AM
Well yeah, but sometimes the confirmation is worth trying. I agree it's not reliable as an actual sexing, but it's not completely pointless.
You really are going to have to quit letting him watch glee.:p
Ikr
ConcinusMan
09-21-2012, 02:29 PM
Well yeah, but sometimes the confirmation is worth trying.
Why? to confirm what I already knew? And what of those that I suspect are female? Should I try to pop them? What if nothing comes out? Does it mean they are female for sure? NO. So, pointless. What if I'm sure it's a male and I still don't get anything coming out? Should I then conclude it's a female? NO. So, pointless.
Look, this is how Amy (a boy) ended up with a girls name. Breeder "popped" nothing came out so marked as female. I take one look at the snake and it looked male to me, but I just went with what the breeder told me. Low and behold, my suspicion was right. He is a male. I didn't need popping to tell me that. In his case, sexing visually by me, was accurate. Because he didn't pop, the breeder thought he was a girl.
In other words, popping at best, isn't any better than just an experienced eye, sexing visually. You're still going to have mistakes.
RedSidedSPR
09-21-2012, 02:40 PM
Yeah, you're right. Obviously pointless for females but still, it can prove if something's male, if you're not sure, just don't dub it female if nothing pops..... Like I bought my checkered at a show, he was labeled male, but he had this really female-looking tail/vent, so just to make sure, I popped him, and proved him male. If it hadn't popped, I wouldn't have dubbed him female, but having the proof pop out proved what I would have called female, a male.
It's an unreliable, often pointless tactic but it be useful. Just don't judge on its NOT popping
BLUESIRTALIS
09-21-2012, 02:43 PM
Popping may not be 100% accurate but it's our most effective way of sexing babies. I feel like if a suspected female don't pop after 3 or 4 times it's got to be female. You just have to know what you are doing when it comes to popping. If it pops male then you're done sexing that one. I have had babies with the taper that i would have swore were females and they popped male. The visual thing is only effective in adults. The first thing i do is look at them and then i pop to see if i get the same conclusion.
RedSidedSPR
09-21-2012, 02:47 PM
Exactly^
And yeah, I'm only talking about babies, adult visual is perfectly effective.

I just realized, somehow for the first time, that Rooster (male concinnus, not even a year old) is now almost exactly as long as Spooner (male red sided, easily 4-5 years old). Decided to try those 2 together.. Put smoke and red back with Oscar.. Think this will work out better due to size. Spooner is significantly larger then either of them

I just realized, somehow for the first time, that Rooster (male concinnus, not even a year old) is now almost exactly as long as Spooner (male red sided, easily 4-5 years old). In captivity they pretty much have and unlimited food supply and grow rapidly compared to wild snakes that have to hunt and go longer without food. Also being wild caught his growth could have been stunted by parasites.
RedSidedSPR
09-22-2012, 07:04 AM

I wouldn't say that. I think just about all T. sirtalis subspecies, but perhaps especially the western ones, all get to be about the same size. I'm pretty sure that rooster was from one of my litters last year. But anyway, they do have a tendency to get big fast. They are in a big hurry to grow out of the baby stage. This takes them off the menu for many predators, mainly small birds, but it also allows them to take advantage of larger food items such as rough skinned newts and bullfrogs sooner. A captive concinnus at around 4-5 months old will get as big as a year-old one would in the wild.

Yeah they have a lot more reasoms to get big fast.. I Worded that wrong, should have said "they grow faster" but don't they usually get a bit larger then your average sirtalis?

I've seen that before. The thing is, they will do that especially if the females aren't in heat. The humping other males is explainable. He is showing his dominance over the other cat. It's not about sex.

It's called mopani wood.. You can find it at most pet stores for a largely overcharged price. it's my favorite decor though.
They come in little bags of multiple little pieces of the wood, or a big piece like these. You can screw 'em together, stick plants in them, whatever. They're pretty cool

Mopani wood is awesome. I use it too. It's from Africa and it's the hardest wood known to man. Will not rot in moist environments and can even be used underwater if you soak it first to leech out the tannins.
All commercially available mopani wood is salvaged from burned and/or dead trees.

It's called ReptiBark.. I love it, looks natural, easy to clean, too big to stick to food usually, or be easily swallowed (although if they did, it wouldn't be good..). I prefer it over Aspen because of the color and cuz it doesn't stick to food.

a few days before the shed, their eyes will go blue, as in solid, opaque eyes. You'll also notice a significantly more dull snake.. The eyes will clear up, and a day or so later they'll shed.
After the shed, he'll be considerably brighter, more colorful, and quite soft.

New female just me 7 times repeatedly, along with poo and musk, when I picked her up to clean the cage.
If this continues she shall be called Cruella.
But seeing as its fear, not malice, who knows.
She's terrified of me. I open the cage for feeding and it's enough to make her not eat. This is how my checkered was but he sucked it up when food was involved, and eventually got over it until the next handling, they'd be a all skittish again.
She's just freakin tripped out. Not what I expected the first 3 days after arrival, she was damn near lethargic she was so chilled.
Got no problem whatsoever with the biting and stuf, as it's the only snake that does it, I actually like it. But the not eating out of fear is annoying

I know that substrate can be a problem but with snakes like that I find that they will eat if given privacy. Like, a feeding tank with paper towel liner and a hide where the snake feels safe. Place the food in the hide. Do not disturb. Perhaps leave it overnight. This is also the only way I've ever gotten rubber boas to eat. They have to feel like they aren't being watched or seen.

I read an article explaining the evolutionary uses of scents of reptiles in a reptile magazine. It mentioned that sometimes male garters have scents that are similar to females due to in balances in certain hormones, this causes other males to persue him as if it is a receptive female.
ConcinusMan
11-11-2012, 04:06 PM
I'm aware of that but that's not what's happening here. What you mentioned is probably an adaptation to cold/ northern climates and it seems it's only red sided garters that do this, and only a few of them are "female mimmicks", and only at the time of year when they first emerge from the dens. The theory is that attracting numerous males to pile on top of the female mimmick, has a thermoregulatory advantage.
For some reason, the attaction happens every time my female concinnus' shed, regardless of the time of year. Right after shedding, the males try to court the females although the attraction isn't as strong or long lasting as it is when they are receptive to mating. I've personally never had a male try to mate with a male though. It's always been male on female, right after she sheds. It also doesn't seem to attract a T. ordinoides to a concinnus though. Just concinnus to concinnus. At least that's what I have observed.
RedSidedSPR
11-12-2012, 12:03 PM
Well this is male to male, and parietalis to concinnus.

The annoying part is keeping them seperated. I don't have a spare cage. When I put him in with the other snakes, smoke does the same thing, when I put smoke with spooner, he does it to smoke. There's no possible combination of snakes that doesn't result in weirdness.
