Jesse, it should be fine. I doubt it'll harm your snakes. It happened once, so I'm sure they're fine.
RedSidedSPR
09-13-2011, 07:57 PM
"Fine" as in, "aren't going to die".
kibakiba
09-13-2011, 08:02 PM
So? That should make you happy. Your snakes aren't going to just keel over and die immediately.
RedSidedSPR
09-13-2011, 08:03 PM
I never thought they would! When i worry about parasites, I'm not worried about them dying.
Of course it makes me happy. Still don't want parasite in my babies!!

I know you are. No offense taken.
So 30 f for 3 months won't work??
I don't think so. Try about 30 degrees colder, and around 60 days (probably overkill) to be sure. Tapeworms (and their larvae) die rather quickly at temperatures below freezing and that's the main concern, and their eggs (the species of tapeworms that reptiles and birds get) can't hatch and directly infect them. They must go through larval stages in a fish or amphibian (digestive system or muscle tissue) and then get swallowed by the snake.
Mematodes are a little more complicated: Merck Veterinary Manual (http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/bc/171410.htm)
Don't panic. Even the meds I gave you won't completely rid a WC snake of all possible nematode species they could be carrying. The idea is greatly reduce their numbers and chances of getting reinfected. You only really need to keep them from getting overwhelmed to make a big difference when compared to doing nothing.

Gotcha.. he only ate two tiny chunks of thigh meat, I'm not too worried, but that helps thanks.
I can't make it colder. Darn. No more frog legs for Smoke.

Don't get too obsessed about parasites just yet Jesse. You're a good garter keeper. I'm sure your snakes will be healthy and happy for years to come. A few worms, if they even have them, is not the end of the world.

Hey, how many people here have 5 adult (well, not baby) snakes in one cage? How big is it??
How many snakes can you fit in a 20 galling without "overcrowding"??
Thanks
RedSidedSPR
09-18-2011, 11:47 AM
5 or more that is.
katach
09-18-2011, 02:04 PM
I have our 5 adults in a 20 long. 3 are NW though so they are smaller. They all can find their own space. Plus we have the raised ledge and several hiding places.
RedSidedSPR
09-18-2011, 02:22 PM
Alright! Planning on getting a big front opening tank or something eventually, but good to know they can go in my 20gal until then.
FYI, I'm bringin this up, because all ng babies will go with my adult eventually, and at the rate theyre growing that isn't far away. They'll outgrow that 10gal fast.

I have 8 snakes in a 20 gallon... Most of them are babies, but I have a yearling, sub adult(2yo) and an adult female in it. They all seem happy to be together.

Whoa..
kibakiba
09-18-2011, 06:30 PM
NWs are pretty dang small. They all have room to be able to move away from the others if they need to. It's a temporary thing until Hades is out of quarantine.
RedSidedSPR
09-18-2011, 06:44 PM
No I understand, but ive never seen 8 snakes in one cage unless it's a litter if babjes. Just seemed like a lot! Not too much, space-wise, didn't mean that.
kibakiba
09-18-2011, 06:48 PM
Yeah, I as just saying. I personally wouldn't keep 8 adults in one 20. 4 max, I had Snap, Ember, Snakey and Mama all in one tank for a while... Snap didn't like Mama. Lots of cat fights between those crazy women.
RedSidedSPR
09-18-2011, 06:53 PM
It would be no more than 5, no less then 4. So I think it'll work out.
katach
09-18-2011, 07:05 PM
Ours are pretty happy. The tank is 30in long, 13 wide and 13 tall. They have layers inside for climbing and to increase usable space.
RedSidedSPR
09-18-2011, 07:13 PM
Same as mine.
That's was the idea with my 10gals new setup. you know with that platform and excessive plastic vegetation.
Again, eventually they'll all go in a BIG tank. Just not sure when that'll happen so they'll be in the 20gal for a bit.

Love the new set up! I bet they love that shelf :)
I have two large adults in a 20L right now and I think I'd be happier if they had a bit more room. I also have two younger adults (08 babies) in a 20L and they have plenty of room, however :)

Spooner is being dewormed.
Means I will be able to put my babies on with him soon, still not sure what to get for the cage... I could go with a nice front-opening big cage, or I could get a cheaper big normal tank.. I could get and alltogether big tank, or one that is bigger than mine by ways of tall.. Same floor space as a 30gal so but taller in porportion than my a standard 20gal.
Or I could just get a nice big 40-55gal normal boring old tank.:D

But of course I can't post 'em.
FYI when I say "photoshoot" I mean set up shots like this, usually on a white or blue background, on my desk or floor.

RedSidedSPR
09-26-2011, 05:09 PM

Olympus FE-20, old archived product with 2 inch macro and horrible flash.
Not actually that bad, I like it, but it's very hard to work with indoors!
But I'd recommend it.

Hey cool I popped a snake!!!
Ive always been scared to pop them, plus I don't like it... I read it hurts them or something, and I just sex them visually.
But, I was having doubts that my checkered was actually male... His tail just screamed FEMALE!! I was annoyed at that, and finally, after weeks of staring at his tail, decided to gently START popping him..
I just did what I've learned, gently, not even all the way, and it was EASY! it's all about finger placement!
Yup. He's male. But I swear, I never would have guessed that...
RedSidedSPR
09-28-2011, 07:31 AM
Red at feeding time.. Not normal.:p
I've said it before, how crazy Red (flame) gets with food, almost to the point of being dangerous. Last night I was done, and even several mintutes later, I picked up the blue wash cloth I used for pictures and it sorta bounced around. He threw himself at the glass, mouth open wide, going nuts, pushing hard as he could to get trough the glass, and fell over backwards into the water bowl....
I had to see if he'd do it again, and he did. I just shook the towel and he came out of the leaves and did the same thing (without falling in the water)
So thats why he's potentially dangerous during feeding time, he attacks movement. That would include another snake.
He doesn't get like that really with tong feeding, but anything else, especially ALIVE, and he'll be like that. The first and last time I put feeder guppies in te cage with all the snakes, he literally came flying out of the hide (didnt even know where he was) and just threw his whole body in the water bowl!!! He was swimming in circles, taking down more guppies than I thought possible in that time, the other snakes came and any movement they'd make would cause Red to attack them. After he bit Smoke, and compulsively stole a guppy from Rooster (concinnus) I took him out. (he bit me when I touched him) So, 1., the rest could eat, and two so they would be safe.
That's the last time he gets guppies with the other snakes.
Oh yeah, and on Sunday, I was feeding him down on the floor, he missed the tilapia, and chomped down on my finger looking like my checkered. He would not let go, trying his best to pull me away and swallow me, until he finally gave up.
Steves story inspired/reminded me to tell all that.

Sounds like Red needs an attitude adjustment.:D
RedSidedSPR
09-28-2011, 07:45 AM
He's a sweetie when there's no food involved. It's not even attitude, he just gets way too exited over food!! Which is why he's usually the fat one.
It's nothing like my Kleo. She's very gentle with food - she must smell it from all sides and when she's convinced, she opens her mouth. ;) Izy usually smells her food and then bolts towards it. No "flying" moves...
As for guppie hunting technique... Kleo has two options: she stares at the water and BAM - strikes and gets a fish. Alternatively, she puts her head in the water and makes few circles with her mouth wide open. Izy does the same trick, but she usually enters with her whole body into the dish. She doesn't do the Kleo's first trick though.

Ok sorry, I misread your posts as her being psycho like that.
That's how my adult is with fish. I'll upload a video from back when I first had him, and was feeding him live fish and worms. Now i don't, cause this live fish were Rosies.
This was before i joined here. Everything I read recommended rosies. I still have a huge stash in my freezer, and he gets some ever now and then, cause he loves them. It's the only food he's guaranteed to eat at any time, so I used them to deworm him.:)

Updates:
Alright, I have decided on a name for my checkered. Oscar. Cause he's a grouch.
And for any one who missed it, I forgot to mention the concinnus' new name, the one you guys gave suggestions for, (yeah yeah i didnt use them) which is and has been for awhile, Rooster. As in, Rooster Cogburn. this one was thought out hard, he's named that for being fearless, bold etc, and BIG. Lol.
Also... Weighed the babies today.
Smoke (anery) 9 grams. (he's around 10inches)
Red (flame) 8 grams (he's around 9-10 inches)
Rooster (concinnus) 7 grams (he's around 12inches but leaner/thinner)
Oscar (checkered) 4 grams! (tiny little guy... can't measure the nut)
Rooster and Red are still in shed. The humidity has been surprisingly low so they enjoyed a bath in the tub. As long as my hand was near, they had fun. Spooner did not eat the new found food, tilapia, today...

The timing varies a lot Jesse. Here lately, before I sold Amy, he would shed and look good only for a few days then go right back to faded and "blue". He stays that way for a freaking month before he finally clears and sheds. So, even the same snake can have widely varying timing on the shedding stages.
RedSidedSPR
10-05-2011, 03:07 PM
A month!? Weird.....
Well anyhoo, he just shed. And for the FIRST TIME EVER, I watched the WHOLE THING!!! I'll work on that and post it tonight if it works.
Awesome.

Made a thread, for those un-subscribed. But here it is.
I just watched for the first time, one of my snakes (Rooster my concinnus baby) shed from start to finish. Doug my homework, saw him moving and new what he was doing.
I took a video of the entire thing, it was 12:00 minutes long. Had to take it with my iPod (camera was dead) therefore had to upload it from my iPod (no computer yet anyway) and it made me shorten it to 3:00. Had to trim it up like you'll see. Probably for the better.
I was all ninja like, weilding my iPod and camera (video and pics) at the same time! Whatever, just saying thats what the flashes are....
Anyhoo...

Babies are so cute when they eat. I love the way they attack everything so viciously. My adult will pretty much just open his mouth and let you drop the food in (unless of course you do it wrong, in which case he goes bonkers...). It's crazy how quick they grow too, you had a good idea getting so many pictures/videos of yours as babies!

The time you set for quarantine should not be compromised.
If you set it at 4 months then hold to it.
If you don't you will find other reason not abide by the time again.
Another 30 days can't be that big a deal.;)

Adjusting quarantine time can only end in the deaths of more snakes. Possibly a whole collection.
The chances of this happening are slim but just the fact that it does happen should make a quarantine period like stone.

Oooh, oooh, pick me! I know! :p Anerythristic Red Sided (T. sirtalis parietalis) Mutated gene responsible for producing red pigment leaves the snake unable to produce red pigment so the areas that should be red, have no pigment at all.:D This is of course an oversimplification because it also effects the stripe which would normally be yellow usually. The cool thing about these is that if you can produce a snake that is both anery and albino, (amelanistic) you get a very clean looking snow. (entire snake lacks all pigment colors)

Is he het for albino Jesse? possible het? That would be a bonus. At any rate, if you breed him to an albino you know the babies will be het for snow (double het for albino and anery) for sure. Thing is, you gotta wait another generation to get snows. I guess that's why parietalis snows are still so expensive.

Oh, so it's cheaper then (if bought on allegro [local auction site] of course; in petshops prices are twice as high or even more) in here. Last time I checked, viv 80x40x40 made of glass costs around $62 on allegro (the cheapest).

I LOVE looking at how small they were.
Here;s Smoke and Red back when I got them.. I got Red to make Smoke feel more secure. He was terrified of coming out.. Red helped that, and they literally never left each others side. If one moved to a different hide, the other moved with him. They came out together, and went back together. Was CUTE. Wish I had my camera skills back then, don't have a lot of pictures.
They're still like this, just much more bold now, having no fear of coming out and of me, but they're still buds. Which is why I'm keeping them together when I move everyone.
All of these pictures are in the exact same spot, under the exact same hide.

Same as mine. Nikon Coolpix. There are many models and price ranges to choose from. Best darn camera under $300 that I've ever used.

Yeah...I think I looked at those...they were a little more than I had in my budget...I got a Canon PowerShot...it was under $100...I like it. But that pic of Jesse's looks amazing!

The 12-14 megapixel Nikon coolpix models that don't do video, and have lower zoom capabilities are under $100. The photos they take are just as good as the ones we have been showing you. The one I use (S6000) is only about $140 now.

That's the normal price yea. Like $250 almost $300 actually

Mine (s6000) was $289 (camera only) when it was the latest model. I got it on sale so I got the wall charger, case, and SD card with it, all for $250. It's much cheaper now of course, since there are newer, better models out now. I think it's just about bottomed out in price now. Been just over $100 for an unused one, for quite a while now. All I gotta say is, don't go and spend $89 on a crappy camera. Might as well wait until you can spend $50 more and buy a coolpix for $140. It's well worth it. I paid a lot more and still think it's definitely worth every penny even at $200.

My Canon is a decent camera. I like it...it has a lot of great features. I will def try the Coolpix when I want to upgrade but I am happy with this one for now...I think it's a really good camera for the money.

I haven't been taking a lot of snake pictures lately... but here's some of the latest.
And excuse the messy cage, it's being cleaned now...

So I've been putting my adult's future room mates in with him a lot lately.... they're probably about ready so whenever we get that cage I'll throw the two guys in there for good.
Actually all 4 babies are in with him while i clean the cage lol

This is cool. You wouldn't know, but when I got this snake he had a pale belly, with no orange at all.... only orange was a small line along his side pretty much, and his neck/head area. He's colored up drastically and not only the colors, but the location. He's like, all red now. (flash makes it too bright, but he's legit red....) And he ain't done.

Both Rooster, and Smoke just shed in what would have had to have been at the exact same freaking time. Of course, I missed it, but I left the cage for like 5 minutes and came back they had both shed.
Would have made a cool video. -______-

I'm good with the last three abbreviations, we were using them in chat rooms before you were born ;) Trouble is with the new evolutions of text/IM abbreviations, the driver behind those is so kids can have conversions without their parents understanding.
I do find it interesting from a language perspective that these abbreviations are still evolving when most of the time kids are tapping them into an iPhone which has predictive text, using unlimited text messages so they aren't limited to 160 characters, or using them online. It all negates the necessity that drove the creation of the language... I digress though.

Sometimes it's hard to type out "I know right" or "what the f" when you can just type ikr & wtf.
I'm not like that I spell out "you" and "why" etc, but when I'm in a IM chat room I'm not spelling out sentences that can be trimmed downtown 3 letters and look exactly the same to everyone there. Sometimes I just do it out of habit here.
Wtf, stfu & gtfo.. Ikr.. Those are not worth writing out when everyone knows what it means.
