I have bred them... And the mom is possible gravid again. Not many people do breed them due to the fact it's a bit iffy... They can retain sperm for a long time, and a lot of the time, they wont get gravid immediately after mating, it could take months for her to choose to be gravid.

I have 8 babies right now. They still need to eat and get bigger. They will need homes when they are ready though.

Do you know where they live?

I ask because I'm a little nervous shipping. I will wait until fall to ship, but I have never shipped reptiles. This is our first clutch ever.

Starling96
08-10-2011, 03:52 PM
yea
when i do start breeding ill hate shipping lol

katach
08-10-2011, 06:19 PM
Maybe I can find someone around me that is on the forum and has shipped snakes to show me so I'm not as nervous.

I doubt they'd be very expensive ;)
Kat is the one with the momma, so she'd name the price, but I know for a fact that Kat is a very fair person. :)

katach
08-17-2011, 11:42 PM

Starling96

I'm really hoping that Blade and Snakey can produce at least a few red stripes. I know that it's a coin toss, but I'm hoping that since they are both reds they might have better chances.

Starling96
08-17-2011, 11:51 PM
yea
i personally like the more patterned look
i thinks its because my ribbons are so "uniform" if u know what i mean

katach
08-18-2011, 12:01 AM
3 of my current NW babies are really darkly patterned. They are very pretty. The one with the best markings is my entry to this months photo contest.

kibakiba
08-18-2011, 12:02 AM
I like my NWs, they really seem to seek interaction with me and when they're being held they love to check everything out. Not all of them are sweet, though... Hades, for example, is a jerk. :D

kibakiba

Yeah, his name really fits him. I wouldn't mind it if he didn't change, though. He can be as nippy as he wants to as long as he's healthy and happy.

Starling96
08-18-2011, 12:11 AM

Adjusting to what? Nevermind. Don't answer.

Im sorry but Im confused what are ordinoes? Someoe please post pics so I know what is talked about thatnk you.

It's Thamnophis ordinoides, not "ordinoes". Northwestern Garter snake. And I've had plenty of babies born and also gave away and sold the last of my adults recently. I no longer have any. Although I can catch them, in order to do well in captivity they need to get eating (sometimes a challenge) and dewormed and I don't have time or space for that. Shannon has Miss Piggy, my red striped girl to hopefully breed with her red stripe male. Steve has a group of adults I gave to him. Apparently some babies have been born. I doubt he'll want to part with them. If I wasn't selling all my snakes and moving I could probably get you some. I don't know of anyone else on the forum that can do this for you. You'll probably have to wait for litters next year, if any at all are born. Wouldn't do any good to show you just one picture since no two are exactly alike.

NW are awesome.

We do have quite a few newer members lately that live in the NW and keep them. Maybe some of these people can learn to ship and perhaps take over with the providing spemimens to the rest of the forum members who don't have access to them. Bottom line is, very few litters are born in captivity, and litters are very small so CB babies aren't widely available. However, if someone lives where they do, they can catch them, screen them, and perhaps provide specimens that do well and eat well. Many have to be released because they don't adjust.

I just can't provide this service any longer.

Kat and I have a breeding project, Richard, so it's okay. :p

As am I, Snakey's a ladies man, so you wont have to worry about getting any viagra for him... :D Oh, and I got him eating again... So I'll be fattening him up a bit.

katach
08-19-2011, 03:48 PM
Well that's good I wouldn't what dose to give a snake! LMAO :D

kibakiba
08-19-2011, 03:53 PM
Haha! If you gave him a whole pill, he'd be courting everything, inanimate or not. :D

Me too, if it works like you both think, that would be freaking awesome.

katach
08-19-2011, 04:24 PM
I have no idea if it will work or not, I'm just hoping to produce at least a couple reds. That would be way cool!

RedSidedSPR
08-19-2011, 04:26 PM
Keep in mind, like alot of "morphs", (not that they're morphs) they may be normal looking as babies.

katach
08-19-2011, 04:29 PM
Ok, thanks!

RedSidedSPR
08-19-2011, 04:31 PM
Crap sorry, i meant normal looking as BABIES!!!! I edited.

katach
08-19-2011, 04:32 PM
Oh, ok. I wonder if any of the babies I have now will turn out red?

RedSidedSPR
08-19-2011, 04:34 PM
I doubt it.

But If you look at "orange" easterns, flames, and most morphs they won't look like much as babies, then they color up to the most amazing snake you've seen!

katach
08-19-2011, 04:35 PM
One can wish!

kibakiba
08-19-2011, 04:53 PM
Well, NWs are blanked out as babies, they could look like a piece of long skinny mold and grow up to be grey with a red or blue stripe. You wouldn't expect to see a black, white and blue baby from a black/orange x brown/white.

ConcinusMan
08-19-2011, 04:57 PM
That's true. Baby northwesterns are nothing compared to what they are when they color up. As they mature, the color they're going to be, then makes itself apparent. You can't even begin to guess what they will look like when they're babies. 6-12 months old and starts to become apparent but they continue to change. "blanked out" is a good description. They're generally born very plain and inconspicuous. The colors come in later. Some of the babies born from my red stripe girl began to develop red in their stripes, spotty at first, at around 5 months old. But not all of them did, and even at a year old, they continue to change.

kibakiba
08-19-2011, 05:05 PM
Yeah, Hades is about 2 (based on his size) and he's changing every day... His black is getting darker and his orange is coming in.

08-19-2011, 06:18 PM
My blue eastern didn't have even a hint of his blue color (or any color) until he was over a year old, but now he's a very vibrant blue green. As a baby he just looked like a strip of tire rubber :p Are there any types that start out really bright and vibrant, like mini versions of the adults?

kibakiba
08-19-2011, 06:34 PM
Well, Runt has stayed the same and she's 1 year away from being an adult. She was a year old when I caught her, though... I've had thumbelina since birth and he's stayed the same for the most part, he's losing his dorsal stripe.
