I found an ad on kijiji selling "Albino Florida Garter Snake" babies. They are selling the babies for $200 each and the female for $275. Is there any reason that they are so pricey or is it just a huge rip off? How much do they normally go for? They don't look all that special to me?

So likely just a big rip off? Marcianus is a checkered garter right?

I wouldn't buy it. My bet is they're trying to screw you with that price.

Thanks guys. The first garter I've found on kijiji too. Darn!

Just out of curiosity, would a "florida albino" actually go for that high?

I bet they would in canada because they are still not that common here, but babies here run around $125 to $150.

I feel like sending him a message saying $75 and I'll take 2 of them, they aren't worth THAT much.

The 2 albino checkereds I bought here in manitoba were $100 last year and then $50 for the 2nd one this past weekend

The one I bought this past weekend the guy bought at the convention as a baby for $45, sold it to me for $50

Hoping there will be some selection of garters at the convention this year. I'd be tempted to buy them all

Kimbosaur: Where in canada are you?

Somebody should contact that person and let them know they have the totally wrong species. They probably don't even know those aren't actually florida garters, I can see how that could get mixed up, them being in canada where these animals are not nearly as common. It's bad if they do sell them as floridas, and they end up getting bred to floridas. You could also inform them that they are not worth nearly as much as the real deal floridas, but the main point here is not the value of the animals, it's the severe misidentification. Either the seller is lying, or they were lied to by someone else, or the person they got theirs from was also misinformed.

it's also possible, but highly unlikely that the seller didn't have a photo of their snakes, and googled an image to use and ended up with a picture of marcianus. But I doubt the florida albinos have made their way into canada to the extent of being bred by random people yet!

Id contact them, but I don't have an account there.

I actually contacted him before I posted on here asking if it was an albino checkered (still a noob! ;)). He sent me a list of species that he has because I told him I was looking for garters:

Central American Garters
Lined garters
Albino checkered
Scott's
Eastern Flame
Plains
California red sided

This just confuses me. If he also has albino checkereds, shouldn't he be able to tell them apart? Maybe it's just a wrong photo? I wonder how he has so many garters and isn't on this forum! Or maybe he is... *glances around nervously* Lol.

Hoping there will be some selection of garters at the convention this year. I'd be tempted to buy them all

I'm in Toronto! Are you talking about the the convention in Mississauga? Have you ever been to one of the previous ones? I really want to go! :)

No, was from the manitoba convention
Manitoba Reptile Breeder's Expo (http://www.themrbe.com/)

It will be my first year going, I missed all the other years because of my inline speed skating races

Darn, I thought you were talking about this one: Canadian Reptile Breeder's Expo (http://reptilebreedersexpo.ca/).

I've never been either. I wonder what the chances are at finding a garter at one of these! I'm so determined to get one. Lol.

The lined garter his guy speaks of is probably a Lined Snake (Tropidoclonion lineatum)
This is not the first time I've seen these snakes labeled as a garter snake.

Yea, the whole thing seems kind of sketchy. He had to get back to me about what snakes were available - something I think most would know off the bat. Maybe he's ordering them or posted the ad for someone else or something...

I'll keep searching.

Oh wow that would be way too much for an albino checkered in my opinion (: I bought my baby female albino checkered for $25 lol I probably coulda talked the breeder down to 20 too, but I thought, hey what the heck they deserve it ;)
