Had my first real bite from Sage today. Was feeding her by hand for the first time, was going pretty well until she overshot the fuzzy and hit the back of my hand. After her sitting there for a bit she just let go and then took that mouse and the one after it no problem. Fun times :D

Love it.
Mine has done that, but lets go real soon, and looks embarrassed...:p

Aww, so sweet :D
Houdini has done that a couple of times, but he always freaks out when he gets my hand instead of the food he was expecting.
Good job! Now you're poisoned by garter's venom! Oh, you didn't know? Garters are venomous! Lucky for you, their venom works only on night crawlers. ;)

I remember reading of a case - in someplace like Texas or Oklahoma - where some kid got a pretty hefty dose of garter venom in his blood. The kid was a real outdoors type anyway, so it was likely the garter smelled food on his hand and just latched on to his finger and refused to let go. He finally had to have the janitor pry the snake off with a screwdriver (ouch! poor snakey!). Anyway, he became terribly ill as a result, but after a couple of hours, it was as if nothing had happened.
But let's calm down our friend - to inject venom, garters have to chew your finger, because their venom fangs are in the back of their jaws. ;)

That, and bee venom is more potent than garter venom.

I'm sensitive to their venom, if they chew , or if they just break the skin and my finger touches their fangs, my hand swells up, turns purple and tends to lose feeling in my fingers but throb with pain. They can bit and break the skin and I don't have much more than a little swelling and itching, but if they bite with more than their front teeth, it gets bad.

The bites from my WC , at least the deeper ones, made the bites itch.. which i thought was weird.

Never had any adverse effects from getting bitten by Houdini, but he's never broken the skin, just sort of scraped it.
I got nipped by a water snake awhile back though, and a scrape smaller than a paper cut ended up with my whole hand getting covered in blood and my thumb going numb. I was always under the impression that water snakes and garters were very similar, so I guess I'm lucky Houdini is very passive?

Well, Snap isn't passive (obviously) and neither was Squirt when I had her. Snap was the one who caused that big problem with my hand the first time. Mama has bitten me on accident too, which caused a bad reaction, probably to the bacteria in her saliva though, cause she was eating.

The water snakes that bite me also make my hand numb. This last time though, it was most of my arm.. Like.. Almost my shoulder.... do not underestimate the power of water snakes venom:D:D

I have got bitten a long time ago but I dont remember wht it felt like and I also remember that it didnt draw blood. Im affraid to get bitten now( not cause of what was said here) because Pheobe is HUGE and I havent gotten bitten by one that big before. I know its more shocking then anything cause you dont know its coming but the thought of anything bitting is kinda scary. I almost want to make her( but I wont) just to get it over with on know if her bite will hurt.

Look, don't ever worry about a garter snake biting you. They really don't hurt. Ther teeth are tiny, designed to hold onto things. My WC adult, when I first caught him, bit me countless times, and even the ones that drew blood didnt hurt.
If you take the rough side of Velcro and touch it to your skin lightly, thats about how it feels.

That's about right. Even this bite just felt like a tiniest pinch and Sage is nearly 3ft long.

It can be startling, but that's the worst. But listen, if she were to bite you, you canning pull away. You just have to sit there until they let go. Pulling away can injure their teeth.

I get bitten a lot by Theif, it's something you have to get used to with a half blind snake I guess. At least I'm not dealing with a blind water snake though, those beasts can bite.
