welcome to the forum from a sunny muggy Liverpool, each time i see the name of your state i get a picture of wagon trains stretching into the far distance,
you can probably tell from this strange statement that i'm a western nut, film and book, all it would take to make me blissfully happy is to load up the Conestoga and head west looking at the horizon over the rear ends of four big shire horses, :o SORRY ABOUT THAT OUTBURST EVERYONE I REALLY MUST REMEMBER TO KEEP TAKING MY TABLETS

thanks for posting them i have not had a chance to get back on here and see that people cant see them.

i looked up sexing and it said. Tail base is thick, and this thickness extends for some distance beyond the vent. the length is about 5" and i thought females are shorter.

Yes, but females are also bulkier than males. Males aren't that thick. Females tails taper, males have a bulge. Post a picture of the underside of her tail, and we'll be able to tell for sure.

The head gave it away. That big head, little eyes...

BLUESIRTALIS

We still need to see a pic of the underside of the tail to know for sure. My albino male eastern is big, has a big head, and is thick bodied so in pics that don't show his tail you might think he's a girl. That's what being in captivity and feeding on rodents can do to a garter. lol

I have a big T.radix male that looks like a female until you see the underside of the tail. As a rule, head structure and body girth can be a good indicator of sex but that rule get broken once in awhile.;)
Photo required here:D

Even not seeing the tail area, I would say that's a female. Thick robust body, broad head. If there's anything you want to know about keeping/breeding WC Oregon concinnus' just ask me. Been keeping them since 1977 or so. You can tell your friend that the reason they hang out in or near the water is because that's where their food is. Primarily amphibians and their larvae, and small fish. They spend a few hours a day out there hunting but they aren't water snakes. They should be kept on dry substrate, moderate humidity, and a large water basin for drinking and occasional bathing. They like a warm basking area 85-88 degrees, with the rest of enclosure in the 70's. 65-75 at night is fine.

nope shire's it has to be, lots of big hills in between the east coast and Oregon besides i'm not absolutely certain but i don't think the quarter horse was fully developed as a breed at the time of the big treks, coming later i think, developed from the cowboys working horse after much crossing. whereas the shire is an old breed coming from the time of the knights in the middle ages but all that to one side, just to live the experience, i would cross the plains on a wagon behind a three legged donkey :D

Googled it! The American Shire Horse Foundation was founded in 1885. Just learned something new!:)

And worcestershire sauce was first made at 60 Broad Street, Worcester, England, then patented in 1837. :p

And if that's not off-topic enough, a dang transformer just blew in my neighborhood and rattled the windows. Some squirrel just got fried, I'm sure.

RedSidedSPR

We've had countless transformers blown since that tornado. I'm taking every week. We always have a backup water supply, cause we usually lose power.

Only thing I think of when I hear "shire" is Lord of the Rings.:D

We have them blow from time to time at any time of the year. Stupid squirrels get on top of them and touch the bare 7,000 volt wire that feeds it. Makes a really loud "boom", blowing open the fuse. The squirrels get instantly dessicated.

the foundation i suppose is a group for the preservation of the shire, although these groups no matter what the beast, don,t come into existence until after the animal they represent is already wide spread, i really don't have a clue about the time span of shires in America but feel certain that immigrants would have been taking them with them from very early days.
just look what you have done now, when i try to have my pioneer fantasy all i can visualize is the ar$e end of a three legged donkey. shame on you

Well I doubt it's squirrels here:D unless the tornado turned to squirrels rougue.
