Good grief, what is it with the snow radixes and the huge litters anyway?
Just got my first snow radixes too. Wasn't even sure I liked the look of those "worms" but ended up getting 3 of them anyway, just for the novelty of them.
Well, turns out I really like them. They're quite entertaining. They do funny things sometimes when they don't know I'm looking.

With these little ones, feeding day is almost every day. I just don't let them get so full that they have big bulges. (unless I'm going to be gone for a few days) They're growing very fast. Not many days go by without finding new shed skins. Seems like they shed, then within a week, go into shed again. Now that's fast growing. At this rate, they're going to be big radixes.

Thats how I feed my babies too. Almost everyday. That's best IMO.

I think they get more efficient digestion eating smaller meals often. It's much easier on them to digest a few small bites each day than it is to try and digest a huge lump.
RedSidedSPR
08-04-2011, 10:22 AM
Yeah, I've noticed they digest it a lot faster, and i mean within 12 hours the bulge is gone. Keeps them active too, not weighed down by the fatness.:p which also helps burning off the food. It does a lot. And IMO is a better feeding choicefor babies than loading them up for a week.

That's beside the point. Because, in case you didn't know, yout can't hold a person over with a pinky once a week.

You could always try and market the 'one pinky a week' diet regimen. It's more reasonable than some of the diet fads out there.

I heard you mention that you were feeding them chicken. Now I didnt know trhat that was an ok thing to feed snakes. Now is that ok to feed even my Eastern Garters. If so then do I just cut it into small pieces and give it to them or how do I prepare it for them.Im just wondering cause we get chicken all the time and I know also that it isnt very expensive. Please let me know cause if any can give me an ok Ill try to give some of mine tonight or tomorrow to my snakes. Please let me know. Thank you and great video by the way. My 4 year was watching it and she also loved it. Thanks for sharing.

so how and what kinds of Vitimans are needed cause Ive never used any and I havve had garters live a long time.

08-11-2011, 02:09 AM
Honestly Jepie, I'm not trying to be rude... But, just because people do it does not make it right at all. Garters are opportunistic feeders, and they will eat things that are unhealthy for them. It doesn't make it okay or healthy for them.
Mrs N1ntndo
08-11-2011, 02:16 AM
I have a weird question then . What are some cheaper things to feed them if you can get the fish or other meats and things like that. What can you feed garters that isnt so much money sometimes.
kibakiba
08-11-2011, 02:19 AM
Night crawlers are pretty cheap. I get 24 for 3 dollars. Tilapia is also pretty cheap, and safe for the snakes.
Mrs N1ntndo
08-11-2011, 02:21 AM
What is Tilapia? I have never heard of that sorry and where aould i get that? I give my snakes night crawlers now. THe right ones and for the babies I just cut them of course.
kibakiba
08-11-2011, 02:24 AM
Tilapia is a type of fish, if your local grocery store has a "fresh fish" section, you can usually find it there. Just don't get it from Wal-Mart, they usually don't have very great stuff as far as fish goes. I've gotten sick from wal-mart products pretty often. Also, make sure it isn't salted. That'll kill a snake extremely fast.
Mrs N1ntndo
08-11-2011, 02:26 AM
So I would just get it and then cut it up and offer it to them. Also I know not to get it from outside the US right?
kibakiba
08-11-2011, 02:32 AM
It's usually farmed in Indonesia. It'd be safe to use it from there. (I'd be wary if it was from China, though, I got some from there and it was disgusting) You need to keep it in the freezer, and cut a bit off while it's frozen to thaw, then cut up and feed the snakes.

08-11-2011, 03:54 AM
oke i dont feed it anymore.
my freezer is stuffed up with other food for them so it is not a big problem

when you buy fresh fish, freeze it for a few weeks before feeding it. in order to kill some of the parasites
jepie
08-11-2011, 06:03 AM
i have all my food in the freezer because somtimes i can get it for half the price so i buy as much as i can and have a nice few kilos of food.

I use frozen tilapia from Wal-Mart (ours doesn't have a "fresh fish" section, only frozen).
I originally bought it to make fish tacos, before I discovered that I don't really like fish tacos. Little Dude has eaten more of it than I have, and she seems to love it, and is in good health.
It came individually wrapped. What I do is slice it while still frozen and thaw as many strips as I think Little Dude will eat. That way, it lasts longer.

What is Tilapia?
One of several species of freshwater fish that is farmed for human consumption. Since it is a vegetarian, it is very low in contaminants such as methyl mercury and PCB's, unlike just about every other fish on the market.
It's very safe to eat. You can eat more servings per month of Tilapia safely, than just about any other fish. Also, it does not contain thiaminase. It's white flesh, very mild flavor. Tastes a bit like farmed catfish. Most of it is farmed in other countries and imported to the USA.
