My husband found a snake outside (garter?) And I would like to know what kind it is so I can feed it properly.

Pics would help. There are two species of ribbon snakes and there are eastern garter snakes in Kentucky. Maybe this will help you I.D. your snake: http://fw.ky.gov/pdf/kysnakebook.pdf

If it's a garter then a good place to start is the care sheet.

You really need to get an ID before you can move forward with care.

Starting your own thread would also be helpful so that members can reply to it directly. The thread that you are in is a "catch all" for many other subjects and topic.

We have tried to feed him a worm and feeder fish and he wasn't interested at all. He shed about 1 week after we got him so i thought that might be the reason, but its been another week and still nothing. Seems like he is getting more used to the aquarium. Should I try another worm? Any suggestions?

You can always try. A couple of weeks isn't a long time.
If your snake(I'm thinking female) spends time in a hide, place a cut-up worm on a small dish and put it under the hide. Many times they want to eat in privacy..
If that works you can eventually move it just outside the hide entrance. After that you can put it anywhere and she'll probably eat.

Here's a link to a thread that might help you sex your snake. It will also give you some ideas on a photo to post and we'll give it a shot.
I'm staying with female on my guess.

I wouldn't worry just yet. Let him get used to the enclosure and used to being around people. From what I've heard, garters can take up to a month to get used to a new habitat, and can go extended periods of time without food. Heck, my Little Dude (a female sirtalis) has barely eaten the past few weeks, though prior to that, she was gobbling up tilapia like it was going out of style.

One thing you could try might be to let him have some privacy while eating. If a snake feels threatened, they won't eat. But if you just put a nightcrawler or two in a bowl and leave them there for a while, he might grab one for a snack.

Point is, as long as he's healthy, he'll eat when he's ready. No need to rush things or worry about it. Offer him the food maybe once every two or three days, but let him determine when it's time.

I placed a hollow piece of bark in his enclosure...thats where he is now. :) How do I keep the worms from crawling out of the bowl onto the paper towel lining and drying out? I will go catch her a couple in the morning. She is getting used to being around us. Instead of hiding all the time (especially when we got close to the aquarium) she just stays where she is and looks at us. do you have any other advice on keeping a garter in general? I want to make sure she is as comfortable as possible. She is my first snake so all I can go by is internet findings (which can be quite conflicting).

You will have to cut the worm up. The small dish you have should have a small lip so the worm can't get out.
The care sheet is always a great place for advise.
This is your only stop on the internet for garter snake advice. It is for garter snake people written by garter snake people.

I wouldn't trust any other site. Never know what they're talking about. This one does.

I agree whole heartily! This site is the best for people who love their garters and want the best for them!
