This is just a question I have been wondering. Everyone is selling or wanting fancy garters... Do people want common Garters ever? Like Eastern Garters are more of what I'm talking about?

Just a random question :)

Some are common, just not common in the buyer's area.

Common, as in normal? I can tell you they buy easterns, flames are easterns. But, a normal eastern isn't as sold as often, but it is. All species are sold in their normal morph.

I understand people would want something more exotic than common I guess but it's just the fact that you can't find them for sale ANYWHERE!!! I would think they would be common to buy as well?

And yeah, I'm talking about a pure Eastern Garter.

Yea they are sold. They just aren't purposely bred in numbers, since they can be found easily, and aren't as rare as others.

I commonly sell "normal" easterns, I have a couple very pretty "normal" ladies and a handsome little male that likes making babies with them.

Never had a problem placing them in good homes.

It's very easy to sell garters. Good starter pets, always a demand. I sell them at $10 each pretty easily.

I found a nice garter today, the most common snake around here, has a stripe on the back, really no patterns, I'll take pictures when I get home from the lake tomorrow

Yellow stripe, black and a plain belly

Well, my Izy looks like this:
http://www.herpnet.net/Iowa-Herpetology/images/stories/reptiles/snakes/Thamnophis_sirtalis_gartersnake/Thamnophis_sirtalis_redsided_gartersnake.jpg

I bought her as normal T. sirtalis sirtalis (never seen her before until she arrived). Is she fancy? :P

Ses normal, but she looks like a red sided. Not an eastern.

Exactly what I was thinking, RedSidedSPR.
That's just what my red sided looks like, apart from the fact she's blind in her right eye.

Sure they do. All T. sirtalis' are "common garters". :cool:That goes for flame eastern (which is a natural wild morph from Canada BTW) or any eastern, Oregon red spotted, Valley garters, red sided, puget sound garter, CA red sided...

In all there are 13 subspecies of "common garter" ranging from one side of the continent to the other. Any garter snakes that aren't sirtalis' aren't "common garters"

Perhaps you meant "normal" eastern garters. I think those would be a tough sell.

I don't think so. I can't be the only one that finds beauty in drab, 'ugly' garter snakes. I'd buy a 'normal' the second I had money, time and space.

I love normals too! Would rather have a normal redsided than any other snake really,

Little Dude and Scarlett are "normal" Easterns. And I find them both very cute.

You are not alone, I enjoy my "common" easterns I found in my yard just as much as my expensive fancy snakes.

Didymus20X6

I don't even have fancy snakes. Just the "common" Easterns. Mostly because, if I could afford the fancy snakes, then most of it would go to pay off student loans anyway.

I'm not so crazy about the normal easterns as I am the florida blues and the erythristics that I see down near the coast.. Of course, since they're really common in the wild they could probably be considered 'normal' to some extent as well.

ConcinusMan
07-25-2011, 05:20 PM
Well, around here, Oregon red spotted are very common but they're "fancy" even when they're normal. Northwesterns are even more numerous and most are unremarkable but you never know what the next one is going to look like. Every now and then a spectacular one comes along. Like Flicker. Nearly solid red erythristic. Then there was the blue one I found, and then.. well, lots of variety in one species.

I don't think northwesterns are unremarkable at all! They are gorgeous in my opinion! But I think normal easterns are beautiful too!!;)

kibakiba
07-26-2011, 03:11 PM
Northwesterns aren't unremarkable. They're such beautifully varied little snakes. I mean, look at Azul. He's the prettiest baby of the bunch. Too bad he's so frail.

ConcinusMan
07-26-2011, 03:13 PM
Whatever. I just don't find this snake particularly remarkable or attractive. nothing wrong with that. I'm just saying that most of them aren't all that great looking but obviously there are many that are very attractive.

By "not really impressive" I mean "not HUGELY impressive" as in, not stunning. But plz dont get me wrong, they're AWESOME. As are all normal and drab snakes.

ConcinusMan

By "not really impressive" I mean "not HUGELY impressive" as in, not stunning. That's what I said. "unremarkable" as in, ordinary, lacking distinction, being of no special quality or type, average, common, unimpressive, mediocre, plain.

At the same time, you can also occasionally find very remarkable specimens that are truly one of a kind such as this erythristic male:

Or this stripeless male:

I really like the drab ones too though, Chantel. I just don't think "WOW!!!"

kibakiba
07-26-2011, 05:12 PM
Well, I think "WOW!" every time I see a snake that looks like a log of poop, or a log of moss. All snakes are worthy of a "WOW!" whether they're colourful or not. Mama may be brown and white, but she's the most beautiful garter I've ever seen.

ConcinusMan

To each his own. I think Amy is the most beautiful garter snake I've ever owned. I may or may not change my mind about that when my high red albino red sided arrives (soon)

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg41/scaled.php?server=41&filename=aaa007large.jpg&res=medium

Plus I did get one of those red albino radixes from Julio. It's going to be a while before she colors up though.

kibakiba
07-26-2011, 05:18 PM
Amy is pretty, but I don't like albinos as much. I do like snows, kind of. I like leucies the most. But, to me, all of my snakes are more beautiful than anyone's. :D

RedSidedSPR
07-26-2011, 05:40 PM
