I know I posted not long ago about a garter I thought was gravid and it was the total opposite lol and I felt like an idiot. Now I have one that seems much fatter than the normal ones I have and she's only 24" long but she seems to be shall we say stretched out pretty good to the point where the only way I think she could be that stretched out and not gravid is if she ate another snake :P now before I make a fool of myself again and post pics :P is there somewhere I can look at that shows gravid garter snakes? I tried google images and I didn't find any nice clear shots that I could compared to to aid me into figuring out if mine could be gravid or not :)
PS you notice just an inch under her head is where it starts to stretch and goes a ways down. Now when I feed my garters worms and mice and such and fill their bellies they don't even look as "full" as she does which is why either she ate a snake or something lol. Just don't laugh at me too much I'm just so excited to someday have a gravid garter snake that I keep wondering when my time will come to experience this.

Do a search in the gallery using the word "gravid" as your search word.

I must be in a mode of desperation to have a gravid garter that I think any garter bigger than my previous one is gravid :( blah.

maybe she's only a few weeks into it? :P could that be possible? I'm guessing you can tell by where on the body the snake is getting bigger?

I'm with Shannon on this one. At this time of the year gravid should look gravid in most species.
Just my opinion.

ok :( what on earth did she eat then lol. She is thicker than my others who eat till their bellies are filled. and she's thick for a decent part of her body. must of been a big meal

I could always be wrong but that's what I see.
She is or she isn't. Time will tell.
Why so imperative you get a gravid female?

Damn. That's almost exactly the eastern morph I've been searching for. But it is a Canadian morph which does me no good unless I can find it here in the U.S. I want very, very black, and very brilliant yellow.
nope. not gravid :)
Agreed. Not even close. Just halfway decent normal body mass. Nothing to suggest she's gravid.
Gravid females will rapidly gain body mass in the last 1/3 of the body. Much of that is gained within 30 days of mating. After 30 days that last part of the body will often get even thicker than the upper parts, and will feel heavy and dense.

thanks for the info, I've never seen a snake give birth and I'd find it so amazing if I could witness some babies being born :D Yeah I just compared her to the other few I have her length and quite a difference, she's at least twice as thick. I guess it's the stretching where you see yellow dots between the scales like when they eat that made me think she might of been rather than her just being thick normally. I like her either way.

she is a nice one.... not quite black and gray.. hard to get real good shots inside....especially when they wont sit still... slightly green with nice yellow head should be popping any time now... she is from Ohio where the melanistics are found...possibly carries the mel gene

Now that's what a gravid garter looks like. They'll expand so much in the lower half or 1/3, that you will see "scale spread" that is, gaps between the scales.
There are exceptions. Sometimes you don't even notice a big gain in size, especially if they only have 1-5 babies inside.
