Recently I purchased a 30 gallon aquarium for Sage to upgrade her from a 10 gallon. The new larger tank holds much more substrate and I've probably put more than necessary into the tank so that it is fairly deep. I've been noticing now that at night, instead of going into her favorite hide like she used to do every night, she burrows into the bedding. This morning I actually thought she escaped because she was completely submerged and had to dig a little to find her. Has anyone else noticed changes like this when changing enclosures, or have snake that do this? Just curious how many people have snakes that burrow vs. going into hides.

YES. When both my snakes are feeling hidey and my frog is doing the thing he does every day (burrow in dirt) my herp room gets very lonely looking... Then the new baby can't resist and sticks her head up for a few seconds. It's like she's playing whack-a-mole or something. :p

Mine use their hides the majority of the time, however there are times when they will burrow and may stay there the better part of a day. Not sure if it's coincidence, but it seems like when they are in pre-shed, they like to burrow.

My adult red sided does it most of the day. When he does use one of his (many) hides, he's still burrowed.

My babies do it occasionally, but rarely because of the substrate i use for them.

Our snakes have an intricate tunnel system in their aspen shavings. They love to tunnel!!!

Mine too. The picture above is what he's doing more than in his hide. There's lots of tunnels

I also have lots of snakie tunnels going on in my enclosures. They particularly like to go under the water dish!

I keep them from going under the water, because the bowls are so heavy. There's not aspen under th bowls, it's just on the glass. But they do that too, if they can
